Regardless I like what Newman had to say about Msu

Maybe no head coach was there more than Mississippi State’s Rick Ray. With a family connection to the school, Ray is doing everything he can to land Newman.
“It is really like all of the other schools, but it is a hometown school,” he said of the Bulldogs. “My dad went there and my uncle went there so they will always be right there at the top for me until the very end.”
Do not expect any kind of quick decision from Newman, he plans to wait things out and take a close look at all of his options.

Obviously, it's a good chance Newman is one and done but if Ray can pull this - that will be an amazing get.

Would be the highest "get" in the history of MSU I think. Newman is ranked #2 nationally right now. Sidney once was #1 but he was nowhere close to that when he finally played.

I gotta tell ya..

"My dad went there and my uncle went there so they will always be right there at the top for me until the very end.”
I certainly appreciate him preparing us ahead of time.

If you could get a 4 star for 3 or 4 years or Newman for 1, who would you choose? Not that ray has a choice, I was just wondering if it came down to a 4-star or Newman

I would go with Newman. Landing him creates almost daily reports by ESPN and sports writers about what players will be 1 and done, etc.
It will show following classes that MSU is a place where 5* players can go.

It will pay off more than landing a 4* who plays 3-4 years because getting Newman will make it easier to then get 4* players in subsequent years.

Well pretending we're getting him, 4 star. He'd be useless on a team like the one we have. Need supporting cast. Grab a 4 star for 4 years and hopefully we'd have some players who could at least shoot 30% by his senior year he could ball with.

But I'd take the #2 too. Why not.

+1.

I know there was some sarcasm in there, but if we're "in the hunt" only as a courtesy, I actually would prefer to know it.

If at the last second, Newman decides he really does like Ray and/or that playing within a couple of hours from home actually sounds like a good deal, great, but at least Ray knows that his 'backup' plan is probably his plan and that he also needs a backup, backup plan.

So basically what you are asking is would you rather have:
John Wall or Jamont Gordon?
Derrick Rose or Dee Bost?
Kevin Durant or Romero Osby?
Greg Oden or Vernon Goodridge?

I enjoyed the crap out JaMoney, Dee, and Osby and appreciated Vern's effort. But give me the one year mega talent all day every day.

Thanks, I knew he was extremely high as well and was surprised he ended up a second round pick. HS guards just didn't get the draft stock that bigger guys from HS got.

I compare Newman to Joe Johnson...like right now! The smallest forwards have the biggest balls...

How many of those won a NC in their one year and if you are going to be one and done why does it matter where you spend that one?

NC or Bust**

So that's what it's come to? Do you remember the tournament runs of Wall, Rose, Durant, and Oden - or who they played for? (I did have to look up how far Durant made it in the tourney) But I guess a Final 4 trip would be worth it a 1-n-done. I vaguely remember what it was like for a State team to advance to the Sweet 16.**

I just don't understand your point.
are you suggesting 1 and done players aren't worth it if you don't win the NC?

If you are a one and done, why not spend it at your dad and uncle's school -- near your hometown, family, and friends -- where the whole fan base(your "family") will basically immortalize you forever -- instead of going and being a statistic somewhere else and called a FAILURE if you fail to win their 10th national title?

See how easy it is to spin that right back at you?

Only 10 of 75 Big6 fanbases remember it less...(using last year's alignment -- will have to be a Big7 going forward, I guess)

That's:

1995:
Arizona St
Virginia

1987:
Depaul

1982:
Oregon St

1979:
Rutgers

1973:
South Carolina

1967:
Virginia Tech

N/A:
Nebraska
Northwestern
South Florida

That was my point engie. Why not play it at Mississippi State. What are the odds you would win a NC anywhere you go. Play for your home state school, your Dad's school.

We would love to have you and would remember you as our hero forever.

Those other schools will just reload with another top 5 player the next year and forget you.

The very fact

that some people are even thinking the opposite of taking Malik verifies that there are a great deal of idiots in the world.

My bad then... I took what you said to mean the opposite -- and apparently wasn't the only one... Glad we are on the same page then!

I don't think you do anything but take him if he's there for the taking. I do question how much time you invest recruiting him when he's somewhat of a longshot and probably just a 1 year player. It would be huge for ray to land the kid. I just don't wanna get strung along by him and miss out on someone who we could get and have for 4 years.

You can't really look at it like that....

Besides, how many people does a basketball staff spend a ton of time recruiting? Not many... They've got PLENTY of time to go the hardest after Malik of any national program(he's in our back yard) -- and still spend as much time recruiting our second and third options...
