Its a travesty that region B has mutiple 0-10 in the playoffs , with first round byes for the top seeds. VHSL should be ashamed of this. Its not fair that other teams in all other regions must play in all rounds and risk injury and not have the luxury to rest and scout for playoffs, very unfair VHSL !

I agree that it is bad, but I dont think with the 2 games in Region B played this week that the top 2 seeds have anything to worry about with the winners. The combined records of those 4 is bad.

Riverheads has already played and severely beat Stonewall (who with the schedule they have had could win their 1st game of year against Altavista)

William Campbell may need to scout, as they only beat Lunenburg by 5.

Like I said in another thread, it should be 4 teams, but that is still 1 less game for all of them like your point. Nothing can do about that with how regions are divided. Now while a lot of us want to just think about football, and this is about football, those ineligible teams have to be in some region. But I think PM should be in this region

As for me, although I know it is impossible, and they shouldn't be in the playoffs, I'm going to root for Stonewall to win it all

The Shenandoah was deep and tough this year, so it is entirely possible that Stonewall could win 3-4 games in some other districts around the state. So they have every right to think they could go to Altavista and win Friday night. I don't think they will, but they should go with that attitude. After all, look what their baseball team did last spring once they got in the playoffs.

Of course beating Altavista would get them a re-match with Riverheads and that would not be a pleasant thing for them, but we will cross that bridge if and when we get to it.

Two questions for you history guys.
Has any team ever made the playoffs without winning a game?
And has any team ever gone 0-11?

They have 0 pressure on them at 0-10 , let it Rip ! But they do not deserve to be invited to the show!

I agree that Region B playoff is horrible, but if we had kept the 16 team format as last year, where would we be? Do you continue to give first round Byes to the East and not the West? Even with 16 teams, you might still get a 2-8 or 1-9 team in there. I agree in the crazy travel of sending a NorthHampton from the Eastern Shore to say Altavista is crazy!
What is the answer? Do PM and Covington move to the East Division for playoffs? they would be ALOT closer to play RHS or WC. Some want to Tri Rivers to Region B. I guess the perfect answer is to be more competitive, but easier said than done. Either way, we cant fix it this year. Maybe VHSL does need to provide a little more insight.

Travel should not be an excuse for this mess, I stated awhile ago that Vhsl should cover atleast half of the cost if a team has to travel more than 1:30 to a game especially since they created this failure of a system.

I believe they made a rule not to separate districts into multiple regions...

It's only a 1A problem -- It is what it is...

in 2A there are several 2-8 teams as #7 and #8 seeds.....

1A is COMPLETELY irrelvalent until the final 8 anyway

No such rule as I know in 4a that Jefferson District for Louisa and Charlottesville are in 4B and 4D respectively

There’s one 2-8 team and one 3-7 team in Region A. And one 4-6 team in region D. Other than that everyone is class 2 is at least 5-5

Maybe they should make a rule that you have to win at least one game to qualify for the Region playoffs.

You have to try and even the numbers out. It doesn't have to be exact, but one region shouldn't have TEN more teams than another region. Just move a couple in A to B, several in C to B, and a few in D to C. Who cares if a handful of teams have to travel a little bit during the playoffs?

Gunz no one is hearing you about the other sports. I almost remember discussions about how people couldn’t wait until the new realignment and now we have this. Thing is, if the Red team and William Campbell were having mediocre seasons would there be outrage? If Altavista and Central were playing well along with the other two would there be concern over this small region?

There are legitimately about 2-3 teams in each region that has a shot except B where there appears to be two this year. Outside of that, let’s be honest and just say it’s an experience and hopefully a building block for next year for most of these teams. If anyone in here truly believes that a 5,6,7 seed in any region will win then go to Vegas and win millions. Generally it’s chalk in these playoffs with someone in the top 4-5 winning it. Not the top 4-5 in a particular region but overall.

Yes Galax was an exception two years ago. And of course there is Blacksburg last year in 3A. They are the outliers if you are normalizing the data. Don’t get it twisted, there are several really good teams this year that didn’t have the win totals they would have expected. But I do not see a 4 or 5 loss team stretching it out enough to get to and win in Salem. But what do I know.

Hopefully this graphic will help. If VHSL makes Riverheads play in Class 2 (as God intended) and takes Stonewall with them, then the geography is less of a factor. The distance from Tri-Rivers schools to Altavista is really not that big of a deal.

“As God intended”, lol. That’s awesome brother. I honestly do not care as a fan if we are moved back to 2A, I enjoyed the few years we played those different teams even though we didn’t win a chip.

Yes. Back in the 80's when VHSL first went to division 1-2 in all 3 classifications there was an 0-10 team to make play-offs. It was done differently then though, all district champs no matter enrollment played in D1 play-offs and but enrollment was used after that. In fact Giles went 9-1 that year but had to play down due to enrollment and teams that were not as good made D1 because the enrollment was to large to play down, confused yet? Memory fails me some but I believe the team from NOVA someplace. They got in because there were no other smaller schools in the region. Not long after VHSL changed and all schools were either D1 or D2, later D1-D6.

It was George Mason High. They lost 9-8 to Brentsville in the first round to go 0-11.

Bizarre to say the least that 0-10 teams are now getting in. I'd just as soon see the private schools combine with the public schools for a playoff bracket than to get stuck with this type of scenario.

The other sports have been mentioned several times. This new alignment is just as unfair and foolish in all the other sports as it is in football.

Most other sports are not concerned with Riverheads. Take a look at NND Basketball - Region B would be a cakewalk for Essex, Lancaster, and Northumberland etc. except each other.

Unless Altavista has a younger Thornhill....

No competition for the top team or two in Region B as it is now. Easy access to the state tournament for those in B.

I think you are missing the point about the other sports. It's not just 7 teams in the region. There are other schools in the region that I assume have other sports.

You can move whoever you want, doesn't matter to me. I just don't think people are remembering these other schools and just looking at it as Riverheads getting away with something more

Speaking of other sports. Look at the Shenandoah District, 9 teams (7 are 2B and 2 are 1B). We had our district cross country meet. Guess what, the 2 teams in 1B automatically qualified for the regional xc meet. The other 7 teams had to fight for 4 spots. So those 1B kids got off the bus knowing they were already moving on. Then you look at the 1B regional meet at Panorama Farms, and then the 2B meet that was run on the same course. Our top girl finished 21st in the 2B meet....she would have been 4th in the 1B meet. Same with our top boy. Big difference in the competition in other sports as well.

Region B demonstrates just how bad the VHSL is. I doubt if there's any other sports governing body in the world that would do to their league what VHSL has done to with Region B. I think this was intentionally designed to get certain teams into Region/State playoffs, in every sport, every season.
This realignment will destroy integrity of VHSL.

Missing the point? What are you talking about?

In Region A's other sports you have 15-17 teams with most sports such as Softball. In Region B, you will have 5 to 7 teams with other sports such as Softball.

Again, obviously the region disparity is unfair and unsportsmanlike for ALL sports....that is the entire point....

I am not concerned with Riverheads much at all. In fact, I have would have zero problems with the schools I pull for (NND) playing in the region B sports tournaments (who cares about travel, it is already happening).

It would be a much easier path to states in almost all sports. (Except it would be unfair to those still in the other regions.)

What I meant by missing the point is not saying what Region B has is right. The point with the other sports and schools is that there is more than 7 schools in Region B. I dont know who/where they are or what sports they have. But apparently these schools have to be in a region for some reason? There is also the 2 schools in the region that just aren't eligible.

Again, it doesn't matter to me. It looks really bad, and I think it needs to be fixed in some kind of manner. All I was trying to point out is when people are saying this huge discrepancy in 1a and 1b numbers, it isn't black and white with numbers 17 and 7

Do anyone know why VHSL did what they did, with Region B.
I would guess that rather than force the westernmost A schools to fall on the sword and be in B, they let them stay in A. In B, they have to travel but have an easier path to the postseason.

My question is what is the best solution, and does anyone know what the reason for these schools that are in Region B are placed there for? Do they have some kind of sports or is it the academic competitions, or What?

And if the reason is something from the red team why there is the smaller numbers in 1b, then shame on VHSL. They certainly don't need any advantage.

I don't think there is a solution that will be accepted by all. But it is safe to safe that the majority of fans like the 12 team format.

Gunz41 I have no problem with that , if Vhsl could not fix region b they should of reduced the playoffs participation for all regions to insure fairness , if Essex as the 1 seed injuries a key player Friday in a game that they shouldn't have to play it would be ashamed and Vhsl should be held accountable!

I have to disagree with this. I think what the goal should be is having all deserving teams in, and that means that some undeserving teams may get in. Not saying 0-10 team's, but in past 9-1 team's have missed playoffs while losing to eventual champions.

While it can be good in 1a this year, Essex opponent may not have a chance, it looks like in 4a they have 1 region with 6 teams and the lower could have a chance, and certainly the other regions in 4a have lower seeds who could make a run.

If this conspiracy is orchestrated to the level that two different school district superintendents can convince the AD’s they deal directly with and the group that meets to decide this stuff statewide? Then I want to know if this guy can run for another office with more impact cause he is either a gangster or the most persuasive individual we have seen in high school sports.

It is a broken system for sure but the insinuation that there is constant and consistent wrongdoing to accomplish this shows either a lack of maturity or comprehension. Who benefits from that? Does the VHSL get that much money from the gate at the games involving the Red team? GTFOH with that.

We travel well and i believe us to be good hosts regardless of which division we play in. The consistency of the regular season record against a predominantly 2A schedule proves out that the team is good year in and out. Put us in whichever division or region you want and this team will show up and play.

The last structure at least kept the whining to a minimum. Whichever setup that is put out there, is gonna have to be adjusted to gain balance.

I am gonna say again if Altavista, William Campbell, Central and Riverheads are playing well it is by far the hardest Region in football. How many titles by region in 1A with current teams the only consideration? I will wait...........
