As far as I know, all four Regions in Class 4 have NOT officially decided to send 8 teams to the playoffs. I do know that this seems to be the most likely final choice by all four conferences.

Assuming this will be the format, pick the 8 teams that YOU think will be playoff bound after 10 regular season games. I know that this can be a little tough, since only about 1/3 of the teams have released their full schedules.

Pick your teams in order of #1 to #8. And keep this in mind when you rank your teams, VHSL points!
A 6-4 team could well be ranked #2 or #3 because of points.

And, pick one, and only one #9 wildcard team that you think could very well make the playoffs if the stars line up.

This list is in alphabetical order, and comes from the VHSL website.

REGION D, 12 Schools

AMHERST
BASSETT
BLACKSBURG
WILLIAM BYRD
CARROLL COUNTY
CHARLOTTESVILLE
E C GLASS
JEFFERSON FOREST
LIBERTY CHRISTIAN
PULASKI
SALEM
GEORGE WASHINGTON DANVILLE

Everybody seems to like Blacksburg near the top, I'm not convinced. But I could be guilty of what I cautioned everyone about. This is final standings per VHSL points, not necessarily who is the second or third best team in the Region.
Blacksburg has so much back and some big-time athletes. They will be very good for sure this year. William Byrd I think is getting overlooked pretty big.

Agree. Not so much with other sports. Off the topic a little, but probably nowhere less of a factor than in basketball.

Yep. In basketball 3A powers like Norcom are very capable of beating 4A powers like Lake Taylor. In football, it's very different. Put last year's 3A runner up Phoebus up against 4A runner up Dinwiddie, I think the Generals would win, possibly by a decent margin.

Whole different animal going up to 4a. Not to take anything away from them but Blacksburg didn't beat any Salem's, Dinwiddie's, or LT's to get to where they got this past year. 4a may very well be the best division from top to bottom this upcoming year in the entire state. Region D may very well be the best overall Region in 4a. We shall all see in the next couple of months.

I don't have any idea what Blacksburg returns on the lines, but they have all of their skill guys returning. They will have a potent offense that can run or pass. Johnston at QB, 6'4" 200, will be a Jr. Speedsters Beck Sr 6'1" 190, & Terry Jr 5'9" 160, will be a solid 1,2 punch in the backfield. Terry also plays in the slot and is a great WR. Coffee Jr 6' 175 is another good WR. They also have a 6'4" WR in Stanaland a Sr.

We will find out early on how good Blacksburg is. Their schedule is front loaded with all of their tough games in the first half of the year. Giles, Botetourt, Amherst, and Richlands OOD, with Salem and PH as their first 2 RRD games. If they play like they did at the end of last year they will do pretty well in the playoffs. Coach Wells has excitement in the program and a lot of talent. No one expected anything out of them last year, especially after starting the season 2-4, so don't be surprised if they defy expectations again.

It will be interesting to see how Byrd does this season. They lost two very good ends and a good athletic QB. That was the best Byrd team last year that I personally have seen. The kids at Byrd are always physical and scrappy. With Basham leading them, I suspect they will have another good season again and could be right in the hunt in Region D.

If they could just get one guy to be a threat at receiver and somebody that can throw the ball a little downfield it would really open up the offense. They had a WR last year but I didn't see a ball get thrown to him and teams pretty much just went man on him with no safety help and didn't feel threatened. I think they will be solid on both sides of the ball but a little worse than last year on both.

@blackknight_pride I know that C'ville and EC Glass play each other in week 1. Who are the three teams that you think C'ville will lose to and who are the four teams that you think EC Glass will lose to? Just curious...

Cville losses to James Monroe, Louisa and Albemarle, but of course could do better or worse. EC Glass losses to Cville, Brookville, Heritage, and probably Amherst. Again, very capable of being better or worse.

Thanks for your analysis. I don't know much about Cville area sports so I was curious to hear the opinion of someone that is more familiar.

I know one thing for sure...both Cville and Glass return a lot of talent from two good teams last year so week 1 should be very entertaining for fans.
