Regional pitching staff thoughts

I normally would agree with holding your ace out of game one. I actually think we should pitch Stratton this time, and I will explain why. But it all comes down to the match ups.

Let's look at some examples from the past and why they were right or wrong.

1. MSU pitches Maholm vs. MTSU. This was a mistake because Alan Johnson could have beaten them, and it would have given us an advantage with Maholm vs. UNC. We were also at home, and were the one seed.

2. MSU vs. Elon. Holding our starter was the right decision because we were clearly better than them, and again didn't need our ace.

3. LSU vs. anyone. They "always" hold their starter because the NCAA loves them and always makes them play someone like Grambling first.

Now- let's look at our regional.

We are matched up against one of the best hitting teams in the country. They have an ace that was drafted in the 24th round by the Phillies and just recently beat Oklahoma. They have also beaten Florida. In other words, this Samford team isn't Samford 1998 that would roll into Dudy-Noble on a Tuesday night and take their check and their *** kicking. They can play.

BUT it's not solely that. Kendall Graveman is hurt. We don't know what his groin is going to be like this weekend. That to me, is the biggest factor as to why the staff is leaning towards Stratton. They simply don't know what they are going to get. Pitch him Friday, and if he isn't better and we get down quick- that could be a big problem that we can't afford.

OK- so what about Brandon Woodruff? I also think that's a bad idea. If he pitches Friday, that would be two short rest starts in a row. And he is a five inning guy max anyway. Let's give him the full rest break. I'm totally OK with Woodruff going up against FSU. He started the Gov. Cup and the SEC Tournament opener and SEC Tournament Championship Game. All high profile games.

Also, there isn't an Elon in this regional. UAB has three guys that used to play for us, Palmeiro's kid, and Ron Polk. All who want to kick John Cohen's *** and would love to put us out of a regional. When we played them last year- they started their ace and their weekend starters all pitched at least one inning. We go down 0-1- not a situation or team I want to face. At least Cohen is used to playing people who hate his ***, so he has experience on his side at least.

And FSU is going to throw someone good regardless. It is what it is.

So, my plan:

Stratton vs. Samford
FSU beats UAB

Woodruff vs. FSU
Samford beats UAB

If we win game 2- pitch Graveman. Not really that much risk if he isn't on. If we lose this game- pitch Pollorena the next game.

If we lose game 2- Pollorena against UAB/Samford, pray that Graveman can go the next game, and then throw the pen in the final.

how long do we keep him in? Are we only asking for 5-7innings with the chance he can go 2-3 innings in game 4/5 or does he go the distance and save him till the following week and not pitch anyone else game 1?

unless we start to blow them out like 10-0. We are going to want to rest our bullpen because we are going to need them over the next two days. And we're not going to want to show our bullpen to their hitters in case we have to play them again- especially not guys like Reed and Holder.

You go in with the mindset that he is going to go 9 and then let the game play out.

Statistically, Samford looks to be the best hitting team in this regional.

A couple of fla st folks have also said the ball can carry @ their field (and their field isn't very big).
Given that, pitching Stratton first makes a lot of sense.

Our hitting seems to be improving a bit, we had some hard line-outs yesterday and were getting more
runners on. From what little I've watched of other conferences this year, SEC pitching seems a bit better, so
hopefully we can get some confidence.

Regardless, it's nice to actually have a bit of confidence in a coaching staff (9th inning on sunday notwithstanding :)

we can`t bank on scoring a bunch of runs....especially against a pretty good pitcher

We have to go with Stratton against Samford. No doubt about it. Ideally, we get a couple really good pitches to hit early, and Renfrow/Rea get ahold of ball they can go long on. If we can get out to a 5-6 run lead, I think maybe we do pull Stratton early, and preserve him for a possible Monday game with FSU.

I think a major wildcard could be Kendall Graveman's health. IF he's healthy, and I realize that's a big IF, I take him up against Florida St hitters on equal footing with Stratton. Graveman excels at beating blue-chip hitters because he's so different stylistically than what they are used to seeing. That's why Florida hit Stratton better than Graveman, and you could see something similar with Florida St. JMO

But bottom line is that Butch Thompson and John Cohen are going to make the decisions, and I trust them to make the right ones.

he has not been used as much is simply because of his control. His stuff is good, but Cohen and Butch for that matter want in their words someone that can shove the ball in the strike zone.

At this point, I honestly would trust Lindgren over Mitchell. Apparently the coaches do too.

That is why they are paid a lot of money.

And they know the players better than any of us. Especially in terms of health and Kendall Graveman.

....he keyed the KY win.

Either or those games is a big spot and he's pitched well in big spots in the past.

Also, Ross Mitchell seems to have icewater in the veins.

Also, If we win game 2, game 3 does have a lot of pressure associated with it. Even though it's not an elimination game, you don't want to get into a one game take all with the host. Game 3 is the game to win if you come out of the winner's bracket.

But yes, all in all, good analysis. The key to winning the regional is to win game one AND game two. Not or. You've got to win both. To win both, you've got to win the first one first.

That game 1 vs. Samford and their ace is going to be a tougher game to win without Stratton than any of the FSU games, then OK -- I'll trust him.<div>
</div><div>That said, our pitching staff is good enough and deep enough that I like our chances either way.</div>

if for no other reason than we don't score alot of runs. If we simply had a better than average offense, that might change things. And as Todd pointed out, Graveman can't be counted on right now. Another thing that I haven't seen mentioned is the psychological effects that could come with losing the first game to Samford.
