So there seems to be some hype popping up about Relf improving. Especially according to BDJ. Some of you guys that have been watching practice, what do you think Relf has looked like? Sorry if I have already missed threads discussiong this.

or lack thereof becomes more apparent, the better Relf starts looking, even though pretty much everyone knows Relf couldn't hit a bull in the *** with a mop.

...the third or 4th and short QB, just as Tebow was as a freshman. Put him in the shotgun with Dixon and Hanrahan as the H-Back lead blocker, put Bumphis or Perkins in motion with the threat of a pitch, then run the option. All Relf has to do is read the defense and choose to hand it to Dixon, pitch to the motion back, or run it himself.

I like the idea of Relf in a "wildcat" package with Bumphis lined up next to him in the backfield or coming around in motion. Croom compared Relf to Dixon as a runner, but he's probably not that much ahead of him in passing unfortunately.

At least we now have a staff capable of having a player improve during their time at MSU, rather than what we have had before. That being guaranteed regression. By the time our QBs were seniors, they were worse than they were their 8th grade year.

since I watched him at practice in the spring, this would be virtually impossible for him to do at game speed.

done anything other than throw one pick to Marcus Washington? If not, then by his lack of readiness becoming more apparent I can only assume you mean one thread on Sixpack where some posters decided that a freshman QB can't be good, in which case Russell's readiness or even its appearance hasn't actually changed any except in the fickle collective sixpack mind. I'm not arguing that he's not ready, just wondering what all happened on the football field that led to this conclusion.

I didn't think Russell would be ready to play in the SEC as a true FR.

last year. The speed of the game is beyond him right now and he won't catch up this year.

He may have to play if there are injuries, etc., but we should not be hoping for that. My dream scenario is that we somehow make it through the year without using him and still have a respectable season.

Bring in Cam Newton and play the Tebow/Leak game with Newton/Russell for 2 years. Then hand the ball to Russell for his Junior year and tell him to set every passing record we have. I know nobody really wants to think about Russell not playing until his junior year, because he is "our boy" to borrow a theme from yesterday - the first "sure thing" at QB in a LONG time - and we all want him to play for 4 years and play well. Believe me, I want one of those MSU prints to be hanging in my office in a few years that has Russell throwing a TD to Bumphis in a big bowl game...the Madkin snow bowl print has run its route. However, the reality is that if we are ever going to be an annual bowl team, then we need the type of Newton/Russell QB situations to be the norm.

This is assuming we get Newton of course, which I think we will.

I haven't seen any practices this week as I've been in New Orleans, but in the spring I saw many of them. And from the beginning of the spring to the end, he looked like a different QB. Why? Because for the first time in his life, I'm guessing, he is getting legitimate coaching at that position.

So, yeah, I'd guess that when BDJ says he is still improving, to the point of actually competing for playing time, I can believe it. And I say I can believe it after declaring him the worst QB in history of SEC schollies after Croom's last spring game. I'm serious, it's amazing what coaching can do with some guys.

I think the work that Relf has put in since the Spring is a result of feeling that he has a legitimate competition on his hands. That with the fact they is being coached up and believes that his coaches actually know what they are teaching to him. Looking at Mullen and Hudspeth's track record with QB's and easy to see that they can coach 'em up.

Relf is a great running QB, no doubt. If he can just throw short & medium range passes I can see him being a pretty good change-of-pace or short yardage QB.

Easy there, Socrates. Never question The Pack. LOL
