Relf: "I need to throw the ball more down field. I feel like the coaches
need to trust me more to throw the ball down the field." That's just one of his comments. He also said Mullen told him he was the starter next week. Thoughts?

Can't really blame the coaches for not calling the plays that way. He misses receivers because he puts no air under the ball and forces himself to make the perfect long throw. Funny how he wants to do what he can't do well.

..I wonder why Mullen lied to Relf & told him he would be the starter next week.

Against our soft coverage defense, USC is going to jump out early.

We will need a QB who can get us back in the game.

Relf is not that QB anymore.

He has yet to complete one down field since Memphis, and he has had a few chances. If he starts next week, I will be extremely pissed off and disappointed. I like Relf. The guy improved a ton, and looked really good the second half of last season throwing the ball, but for whatever reason(mostly ****** protection) he seems to be 17ed in the head now, and it's rubbed off on the rest of the team. If he is not going to be able to run the ball successfully, he is a liability out there, and it's obvious he's not going to be able to run it behind this line. he still needs to come in a couple of series each game to change things up, but this needs to be Tyler's show from here on out to both get to a bowl, and get ready for next year. Thanks for everything Chris, but Tyler is better for this team right now.<div>

MSU barely had 100 yards in the first half because you didn't throw the ball downfield enough. Nevermind the fact that you badly missed receivers ten yards away from you on multiple occasions. You need to throw some more bombs...

Wow. This comment really makes me wonder if he truly has been giving less effort on the read option plays because he wants to throw. I never thought much about this before today, but an earlier post about him wanting to show the scouts that he can throw may have some merit to it. Something hasn't been right with him for a few weeks, and this would make a little sense at least.

Mullen tell Tyler at half that they need him to play the 2nd half, try to spark the offense and execute some plays. He tell Relf at half that he is going with Tyler, trying to get something moving on offense but that Relf is the starter. Kind of a you are still my guy but we need to at least try something else.

I have a feeling Relf has misread the situation. Then again, Mullen may start him for one series, if there is no movement, he will put in Tyler. You can bet your *** he is going to be quick to yank him if there is not some good progress on Relf's first drive.

Relf's problem, other than lacking any type of accuracy, is that he is very slow to make a decision in the pocket. The line cannot give him all day and he is too slow to pull the trigger. Tyler didn't hold onto the ball in the pocket. He made a read and threw the ball.

The receivers getting open for him and not Relf is something I cannot explain.

Accuracy or ability to stretch the field as a passer.Seriously, Relf can't complete a bubble screen half the time. And he wonders why they don't trust him taking shots 30 yards downfield? He is what he is and has excelled at being a hard nosed runner that has been effective alot of the time but when defenses get more disciplined against his game, he has no edge to fall back on. It's up to him to complete mid range throws and play action throws. He hasn't done that in 4 games now with any consistency and quite frankly, it's as much to blame for our lack of a running game as our make shift O-Lines are. If Russell doesn't start next week, this program needs an enema. Do I still have reservations about his experience with an SEC defense? Absolutely but he's more than likely the man next year anyway. And give him a chance knowing he's the starter all week for once. Alot of the bashing on Russell in league games is based on end of game, defense pinning their ears back situations. Let's give him a chance to prepare as the starter, game plan as the starter from the get go and see how it shakes out. He's earned that right in my book for the next game anyway.

IMHO Mullen would be doing Relf a tremendous favor to talk him onto trying TE IFRelf wants to try and make a living playing football.

Russell needs to start next weekend. We didn't score a touchdown in 6 quarters under Relf and looked like a completely different team when Russell came in. I realize its inferior competition in UAB but its apparent that Russell has at least earned the chance to start next week.

Russell made several throws where the receiver was closely covered but he put it right on the money. A throw down the middle to Sanders in the third quarter and the final td pass are two that come to mind. Relf has to have his receivers five yards open to complete the pass and that's not gonna happen often. A QB has to be able to throw into tight windows and that is something Relf can't do.

Relf rarely fits a ball into a tight window. Receivers have to be wide open and then he misses them half the time. Russell can make those throws. It's time to make the change. Win or lose with Russell it will prepare us for next year.
