Hard to comment, if they really are taking in the students

“those students who are already falling behind and in danger of falling through the cracks.”

Then their test scores may be naturally worse? since they are taking on more challenged students. But I don't know much about his school or how the schools in the area perform, just a observation based on what the school as trying to accomplish vs a normal public school in regards to students that are admitted.

Given the importance of and commitment to education displayed by the Black community in general I am shocked that a school started by a high school graduate who has made a fortune playing a game is not performing at a very high level.

5 years ago, LeBron James started a school. Tons of fanfare, loads of resources, fawning media coverage. Oddly, he did it via the school district - rather than starting a private or even a charter school. Today: "Zero 8th graders have passed the state math test in 3 years

Same guy.

On the one hand, they are working with the kids who are the most at-risk academically. So it's not surprising that their scores are low.

On the other hand, the school was started for the express purpose of working with the kids who are the most at-risk academically, but they are apparently doing no better than the other schools. So it's failing in its intended purpose.

Everyone knows education starts at home and most likely the parents or guardians of these kids lack the education to help them learn.
