While Meant is gone (likely for the season), we have to replace him with someone who hasn't had much experience.

Meant was 6' 4" #300 and was one of our only experienced linemen. He played very well imo before his injury in the Florida game last year. His experience won't be easily replaced to start the season.

Stoops listed replacements including Miggins, Bell, and Daniel. Other options include Dubose and Middleton who may be better options because of their experience in the system.

We also have several talented true freshmen who I'd love for us to redshirt, but that may not be possible now. We'll have to wait and see.

Who's your next man up? My money is on Middleton, but he can't do it alone.

All I can say is that there is an opportunity for some of these kids and I hope that someone steps up and takes his play to the next level.

Sure wish we had gotten that kid who flipped to NC State last year.

We need to raise our level of recruiting on the D Line big time!

I expect stoops will move miggons over to the dt spot. Middleton and miggons will man that spot unless Dubose or one of the freshman really suprise.. And i actually think carter and looney will get time because of this issue.. Really would have liked to see them redshirted!

IMO the staff had Elam/meant/miggons/middleton as there dlineman. Then they were looking to find depth in the group of K.Daniels,Bell,Dubose, and freshman..

Bell worked hard and caught the staffs eye. That is why stoops named him!
Also think Daniels is really talented and will be bigtime before he leaves here. Just think he is another year of S&C away. But will play a lot now that this happened.
No way around it that this really hurt,i was expecting meant to help anchor that line.
But hopefully he comes back 6-8 weeks down the road.

Having said all this i think there is talent to work with. Just a lot more inexperienced.
Middleton/Elam/Miggons,or Miggons/Elam/Bell start.
Then you have either Middleton/Miggons/Dubose/looney at DT with Elam/Pringle/Cross at NT with Bell/Daniels/Carter at DE..
Its not all Doom/Gloom but young guys will have to play before they are ready.

P.S. Forgot HYDE.... Remember years ago derrick johnson was in the program and never cracked the rotation til his JR year. And he really played well beside Robertson. I believe he didnt make grades to play his SR if my memory serves right.

the record...young guys having to play before they are ready almost never works...especially in the Sec.

Also need a capable sub for Elam. Till he proves he has the stamina to play on most possessions other than 3rd and long we will need another1A starter. When Elam gets the least bit tired he tends to stand straight up out of his stance and then he loses whatever leverage he had. When he doesn't demand a double team it allows the offensive line to block downhill to the linebackers creating open running lanes.

True... But there are times when you give young guys starter reps, and they improve very fast.
Middleton and Dubose should be be ready from a S&C standpoint!

Go with the Joe Lee Dunn defense. I remember one time against us that he only had one down lineman. Everyone else was standing up.
Last year we went with 2 DT with Ware and Hatcher playing olb.. Pretty effective til ms.st.

I am choosing to allow these young guys a chance before i ditch the season..

Maybe we just go smaller with a LOT of speed and blitz all game
I've actually been a proponent of this for some time. If your constantly losing the size strength battle of bodies why not try something different. Understand short yardage is a problem but otherwise a little less size for some speed and agility up front mixed with a lot of stunts and movement is something Id at least like to see.

Think Joe Lee Dunn! Chinese fire drill style.

I think we will see more 4-3 in our multiple than last year (psst - I think that might help)

Having to replace Meant is setback that we didn't need,if nothing else it hurts from a numbers standpoint at an already thin position. As someone else said better now than a game or two into the season. I hope Middleton is more ready than he was last year, coaches have enough time to think outside the box and come up with some other stuff (and maybe other personnel) to plug the hole(pun intended) left be the departure of Meant

Looks like the initial answer is to move Miggins inside and instill Bell at DE. In other words, Meant is being replaced by an undersized ex-DE and a lightly recruited JUCO now becomes the DE starter. So they're forced to weaken two positions to fill the bill. Depth takes a major hit.

For god's sake, please recruit DTs in the '17 class! Have one, Bohana, Hoskins is a probable DE. PLEASE sign AT LEAST 2 more, 3 would be better.

Unfortunately, this looks like an accurate take on the situation, maybe someone will come out of the woodwork and we get some help where we didn't see it coming

good point Hyde and Pringle are next in line. Ideally I think you would want your NG in on about 65% of the snaps.

It is going to be a challenge. I don't know the roster as well as most of you but D-line depth has been a much discussed topic. FWIW, I just can't see them changing their whole front 7 approach (i.e., going to a 4-3) at this point in the game. That means somebody has to step up (who ???) or "step over" (from another position...NT ???).

Compounding the problem (and as discussed in another thread) is the lack of physical size at the other DT spot (or "DE" as some like to call it). In a 3 down line the DLs are all playing between the OTs and that gets pretty physical. For all the talk about NT you still need some size at the flanking positions.

Peace

It is what it is. One or two of the Freshmen will have to play and give meaningful reps. Miggins and Bell have to step up no question. Many have said it but it's really up to the guys that have been in the program 3 years to answer the bell (Elam, Middleton, Dubose and Hyde). These guys have to give us something and for god's sake please no more injuries/departures.

It may be time to look at converting an OL to DL - if nothing else just for ""big body depth." Any OL not in the 2-deep should get a look on defense.

In fact, if we didn't need him on offense, I'd love to see Mosier line up on the DL. While he may not have the quickest feet, he's always struck me as a guy who likes the contact and he's got some lower body power.

I think everyone here would like to know. What happened? Was it grades, drugs, attitude, or something else??
Stoops said its for personal reasons. Of course that could mean anything and chances are we may never know unless it gets leaked to KSR or something.

4-3 moving Ware back to his natural position at DE, and Bell on the weak side for DE. Or a 4-2. To me seems to be our only options as far as having a decent defense goes. If we still want to continue with the 3-4. Then prepare for team to run on us 90% of the team and we'll give up round 250 rush yards per game.

If the other team runs 90% of the time and don't go way over 250 yards a game our offense will win a lot of games.

There are teams you can play a 4 man front and not have any issues, then there are others who will abuse your LBs in coverage, The reason for so many 3-4 defenses today is the HUNH spread offense, to get an extra player on the field who can cover and play in space.

As for Stoops needing to sign more DTs, well everyone else is in the same boat. 300lb+ guys who are flexible, strong and agile don't grow on trees and everyone wants them. Now with all the satellite camps, more are going to northern schools making them even harder to get. Its looking like UGA will have a true frosh starting and 2 true sophs starting on our defensive front, and 2 true frosh in the next group, 10 guys and only 1 upperclassman and he is an injured Jr. So DL are hard to come by.

Not at all because 250 yards worth of runs at about 7-8 yards a carry equals 45 of the 60 minutes in a game and our offense will barely see the field. I honestly don't have a single clue as to what you're talking about.
We will not give up 250 a game or 7 8 yards a carry. With modest inprovement at backer and a slimmed down Elam we will give up 180 per game. I guesstimate this defense being around 165 ypg which is good enough for us to win enough games for a bowl game.

Was your major in math, or did you ever take any?

250 yards at 7.5 YPC equals 34 plays, with 10% for passing another 4 plays, so in less than forty plays they are going to use up more than half the clock, let alone three fourths of it. Your numbers are way off, but then the post reflects your pessimism about most things.

I don't think I would would want to pay to see a football game that had less than 80 plays for both teams in the whole game.

Literally did no math when making the numbers up. Was just a quess. Had I said 4.5-5 yards a carry for 275-3. Would've been a lot more accurate. Either way. The post doesn't reflect my Pessimism. Because the point remains teams are going to run all over us and chew the clock the eff up and keep our offense off the field. It reflects I took no time to pull out a calculator or care to take any time to do the math. I wouldn't be surprised if we gave up near 300 rushing yards a game in the SEC this year. The post reflects the truth how teams are going to run all over us. Basically you're being a math nazi the same way some people can be grammar nazi's and take it very serious about every little thing.

Our DL is thin. Our LB's are inexperienced and thin. We're not going to stop the run this year much like every other year and it could be real bad this year as far as rush defense goes. Let's just hope we can put points up with teams which seems kinda possible this year due to Dawson's departure (the worst OC to ever OC an SEC game). And teams are going to mix run and pass against us crazily against as well. Say 60-40 run/pass against You didn't include the math as far as the passing plays. Which wouldn't make my math that far off as far as pure guessing and throwing numbers out purely based on making a point of how teams are going to eat our defense up. I took no time into the specifics of those numbers was just making a point. You sir are a silly one.

miggins, elam, dubose. middleton subs for both outside spots. hyde backsup elam. looney 3rd at ng and dt. not ideal but it could be just good enough.... i think pringle is gonna rs. seems to be behind bad. better to rs and get the melvin lewis type contribution than to just burn this year for 1 decent year next year.

According to stoops bell is looking better! He will probably play behind miggons..
Also like k.Daniels... Especially against spread teams!

“We’ve been mixing and matching. Matt (Elam) is still going at nose (guard) with the one’s. Courtney Miggins is still going with the one’s at end. Adrian Middleton has got some reps with that first team tackle. Tymere Dubose has gotten some reps with that first team tackle. Then I’ve also seen some good things from our freshman defensive tackles. T.J. Carter, Kordell Looney, Ja’Quize (Cross), they’ve done an excellent job. They’ve got a bright future here.”

Do we have any open scholarships? Could they pursue someone who was not currently playing somewhere? Thanks in advance
