The franchise tag is a form of labor restriction, albeit one the incompetent NFLPA ratified. The playerās union needs to get its act in gear like itās MLB and NBA colleagues.
Nobody wants a long stoppage, but that may be the only way the NFLPA takes back the power itās signed away.
Especially when your career could be over in one play.
And (the NFLPA) give up what in the next CBA?
On a philosophical basis, I don't disagree, but the reality differs.
Baseball 81 home games BB about 40. Smaller rosters. So fewer paydays and more employees.
Not on the side of billionaires on the side of the sport. Guaranteed contracts will ruin the sport. Heck itās almost ruined baseball. Bryce Harper gets a hang nail and heās out 2 months.

Top athletes should reconsider playing RB. You have guys 26-27 years old not getting contracts. No Star LB or DE or DB at 27 is going to go unsigned.
Josh Jacobs is arguably the best RB in the NFL. He 5ā10 220 #. So where is he going to play? WR? DE? Letās get real. C? Maybe SS? More reasonable. Do they make $10 mil per yr guaranteed ? Idk.

No, the CBA simply caps how stupid the owners can be when it comes to compensating players. No such limitation exists with coaches.
Oh, I'm aware. My point is these teams that are saving $5mm a year by franchising their players are the same ones paying $800mm for coaches and front office execs to stay home and do nothing. Then people side with the owners on this? That's ironic.
NFL coaches and their agents are some of the shrewdest (note I did not say "smartest") people out there. You'd think with only 32 "dream jobs" available for pro football coaches, NFL owners would exert more leverage over compensation for anyone not named Belichek or Reid.
It's not a matter of siding with the owners. Players have as much to do with the CBA as the owners do. They don't like it, they can negotiate a change next time. But keep in mind that a player who is bench ballast carries the same weight as an All-Pro.
That's why the average NFL player is in the league for 3 years.

The NFL has an urgent issue to work through: whether to change its ownership rules so a sovereign wealth fund can purchase a franchise.
Doing this serves two purposes: 1. It prevents the scenario you describe and a costly, 1980s style arms race for talent; and 2. significantly boosts the value of NFL franchises instantly.
NFL owners seem to care as much about their bottom line as much as keeping their club exclusive (and mainly white). It will be fun to see what trumps what here.
I just don't understand what Saquon thinks he'll gain by sitting out. He has zero leverage. He can't force a contract now that he's been tagged. He needs to sign that tag, report to camp and have a great year. The longer he sits out, the more likely he's unprepared for the season which can lead to 2 things...injury or a down year, both of which will hurt him in free agency.
