In a pair of events that just ended a short while ago, the Riverheads Middle School football team defeated Buffalo Gap for the second time this season, but the Lady Gladiators volleyball team lost up at Luray in straight sets. So both teams ended their season tonight, but with one a bit happier than the other.
The final football score was 30-16 and enables RMS to finish with a winning record of 5-4. I did not see the game but it was quite obviously different from their first match-up, which I believe was an 18-0 shutout. As for volleyball I tuned in toward the end of the second set and watched it the rest of the way. Luray won those final two by scores of 25-19 and 25-14.
With the win, Luray advances to the regional final Saturday night and I believe I have read this week that the number one seed has been eliminated already. If so then the Lady Bulldogs should get to host that game. Regardless they will also advance to the state tournament, no matter what happens Saturday.
Meanwhile both schools will be keeping an evil eye on one another's varsity football scores Friday night. Riverheads will be hosting Waynesboro on Senior Night and Luray tangles with arch-rival Page County. The two teams are so close in the Region 1-B standings that just the results of those two games will not be enough to decide who gets the three seed and hosts Brunswick and who gets the four seed and presumably will host Buffalo Gap. In addition to seeing who wins those two games, results of other games will also have to factor into the issue because of rider points.
One way or another, each school will play on beyond Friday night with long-term plans for a Region 1-B or maybe even a state championship.
