Rice-Marist Recap

Overall, a very solid game in spite of the score. Yes Rice was the better team overall. But Marist should rebound and win 6 or 7 games. Both QBs played well for their first starts. Both scrambled well too. Rice's speed was the difference overall with Smalling/Houston and Valladay. Both teams have some nice underclassmen with Morgan/Ivy for Marist and Veal/O'Keefe and Sullivan for Rice.

Going to take Marist time to find their offensive identity.
Agree with Dean - the new QB and entire new receiving corps is going to take time. Morgan seems like a better runner than Skalitzky was but not having the receiving threat that Marist had last year makes them more easy to defend

I only caught a little of the game on BR's website. The #1 thing that stood out to me was the quality of the BR athletes from the skills on both sides of the ball to the lines. My initial impression was they look like a definite 8A title contender. Many tests await, including this week against C-M.

I'm not surprised Marist struggled. So much of what they do is dependent on their QB play and their offensive skills. They are going to need time to develop those areas, since most everyone is new. The timing of the Rice game was not good for the Redhawks.

The thing with Rice is you could contain them a while but then Smalling, Valladay, Houston, Lacy when on O can hit a home run. QB can run but looks to throw first very good pocket presence.

Crete Monee will present a lot of speed for Rice to contend with this Friday. Should be a good game. Marist has another good opponent too. Mt Carmel has the toughest 2nd week opponent of all (ok so I'm kidding)

Very true. But I think that like last year, Marist will be a different team at the end of the year, and certainly one I wouldn't want to face if I was BR. It will be interesting to see what happens this year in the Blue. I don't think anyone sees anyone beating LA, but BR vs MC might be a hell of a game. Only time will tell. Perhaps the reason that Marist was ranked so high is because of some sort of guilt on the part of the writers, many of whom wrote Marist off after last year's regular season record.

More like ND refused a penalty which gave a Soph kicker a shorter field goal, wait never mind is that Sour Grapes? ;):D:rolleyes:o_O

Marist had the good draw and the run to final and had some names back like Awiordan and Topps and a big line. Not a typical Marist offense though. Rice had all key people back from an 8-1 team and a senior QB who was in the system last year. Definitely had Rice winning the game by 2 scores (I had 31-21) didn't think Marist only 7 though. I think Marist is gonna have their hands full with Simeon Fri. 4 days rest only to. Offense didn't look like Marist at all.

They can't throw the ball at all, will be a long season with people loading up the box and begging them to beat them in the air...

Marist's OL was huge but not as fast as I thought they'd be. Their best plays were on the QB draws up the gut when the hogs were pushing around some of Rice's DLs and LBs. But Dean is right the O seemed out of synch for Marist. We'll see how they rebound vs Simeon - should be a good game.. Regardless even if they lose to Simeon I just can't see them losing another 3 on their schedule. Worse case 5-4

Looking at the schedule with Benet losing to Laurence by 10 I have Marist at 6-2 with Naz a ? as we do not know what they have yet. I have Simeon upsetting Marist this week. Total trap game. Short week 4 day week, just played their rival, not in sync yet, conference play starts week 3, Simeon not intimidated will literally play anyone.

The only other teams I can think of that could beat Marist would be Carmel, ND, Benet and Naz (not sure who is on their schedule though)

Don't sleep on that STL win over Benet, STL looked good....

Solid upfront, fast at the skills, really wore down Benet in the 2nd half of the game. Smart kid is dynamic in the open field.

Marist Will switch QBs at some point this year. I was very unimpressed with their D which is suppose to be their strength.

They dropped that soph to the soph level and he started vs Rice there in their 2 TD loss. He is not ready for Varsity.

Fair enough but he was head over heels better then anyone else on the field granted it was the sophomore level. He's my predictions on Marist at some point this year..
Morgan moved to WR
Soph brought up
Morgan doesn't play senior year too focus on bball

Marist has the individual names back in some spots on D but as a whole the machine isn't working, Rice was really a wake up call for them.
