We have a different view of slavery today in the USA because slavery was abolished in this country 140 years ago. It is an institution that we can look at and easily see was wrong and we say good riddance to it, and rightfully so. But we today look back then and wonder why they tolerated it. What we fail to realize is it was a well established institution that typically didn't die very easily. It was a long painful legislative battle in England to bring about abolution. Here in the US, we were in for a worse fight. Yes, it should have been hammered on in 1787 when the Constitution was drafted, but it isn't that easy. Even those that looked at the institution and disagreed with it and saw the wrong in it also realized that it was well established and wouldn't leave without a fight. It's a lot easier today to look back and say, well yea sure it should have been abolished.
People today are also very arrogant and judgemental, not to mention hypocritical. We have things in this country today we overlook that shouldn't be overlooked, some things even more obviously wrong than slavery yet we have the notion that we are going to judge our forefathers. I feel like in 100 years if this country still stands that people might look back on our generation and wonder why, why we allowed these types of things to go on.
