Richlands @ WM keys to success

I believe for Richlands it will be their pass blocking. I believe they may struggle to run the ball early but if they can give Michaels time he will find the open guy and may loosen up that defense for the run game. Hes very accurate and poised in the pocket and good at going through his progressions. But if WM has success getting after him it could be a long day for the Blue Tornado just like the Abingdon game.

The defense gave up a lot of yards on the ground Saturday. After a stellar performance at Marion, holding Wagner to 14 yds on 12 carries, they gave up 300 yds on the ground to Gate City. They will definately have to tighten it up this week. That d-line will have to move some bodies backwards and get some penetration before those runners get going.

Ive never seen WM play but they look very strong on paper. You guys have put up a lot of points and all those shutouts are impressive to say the least. After seeing Richlands the first few weeks of the season i thought it would be their worst team in 4 years. I said that last year too. They keep proving me wrong. It kills me that im not gonna be able to make this game but will be listening. Hope its a good one and everyone comes out healthy.

First, in order to open the door, you must have the correct key. Then who blocks he best, and tackles he best will win It's almost always that way. It's sorta like football.

Wilson is a run heavy double wing team that occasionally slips into the wing T. But don't sleep on their pass game because Cullen is a very capable QB. The prime target being their big TE Leary. On defense they have an above average secondary and linebacker corp. The line is solid but does benefit from the LB's play IMO. Brunswick tried to spread them out and found out how good the back 7 are. Haven't seen Richlands but my opinion is they must remain balanced to keep the LB's guessing. That is the key unit for Wilson. Good luck to all 4 teams playing for the chance to go to Salem.

If it's that kind of game, then it benefits Richlands. We are not your typical SWVA football team on offense. We have run the spread since 2004 and have gotten pretty good at it. We have plenty of runs out of it as well. But, when needed, we can go "big" and run behind our line. To me, the key for the game is if the linebackers of Wilson can cover our slot guys.

Re: Double Wing......Wing T ????

Yes, typically the double wing has both wings just outside of TE, off the line turned slightly in with a FB. The wing formation has a HB lined up offset even with the FB while one WB is lined up just outside of TE, again off the line. There are tons of variations but this is what u generally see with Wilson. They run effectively just inside the TE with this but can hit the edge as well. They have been known to go shotgun 3WR, 1TE, 1RB but it has been a rarity and mostly used when trailing and limited time left. They have homerun hitters in the backfield but are very capable of grinding out long time consuming drives. And one thing I almost forgot, the FB can motor. If he hits the A gap and gets second level consistently, it could be a long day for Richlands. In my opinion, if McCauley(1) is hurt, they are much easier to defend. He is the speed guy, Swift(34) and Chapman(?) are the bruisers. I am sure there are some that would disagree but it is just my opinion.

Wilson has the athletes to run just about any offense they want. I think they are much more dangerous out of the gun, but they have had a lot of success out of their base DW/Wing T looks.

I'm not sure if #1 McCauley will be able to play this week or not, but he is a very good athlete and a playmaker. He can play any skilled position well on offense. Maybe Trevor can fill us in on the severity of his injury but being that he went off the field under his own power and was walking along the sidelines seems like a good sign.

I'm not sure that Wilson has seen an offense quite like the Richlands offense yet this year so that could definitely present a new challenge. Most of the schools in Aug. County are running some form of Wing t/dw, and when they caught RE Lee they weren't able to execute anything on offense, much less pass the ball. Waynesboro is probably the most dynamic offense they faced, but they were not anywhere near the same team in week 1 as they were late in the year. I hope the defense steps up to the task and is able to slow the Richlands offense down and create a few turnovers like they did last week against Brunswick, but something tells me the Richlands QB is a much better passer than the one they saw last week.

Re: Double Wing......Wing T ????

hr6, double wing has 2 wingbacks, one on each side, usually a qb and a fullback. Old Wing T looks like Giles, wingback on the right, tailback and fullback, and a QB instead of a blocking back. Not sure about newer versions of wing t

The backup Jesse Trent (I think that's his name) filled in very well for McCauley on Saturday. I was pretty impressed with him. But like you said, not having McCauley makes things a little easier for the defense as he is a threat to take it to the house anytime he touches the ball.

I had heard that Trent played very well on Saturday. I disagree about them being able to run any offense. They have a very strong core that has most of their reps running the DW/T. They can play out of shotgun but their line is built for running the ball. Their pass blocking is average at best. It's a mindset and I do not think they can pass 20 times a game and win. Bread and butter is motion, pitch back to Swift with FB then QB leading on dive play between tackle and guard. McCauley hits the edges more and it's mostly sweeps to him. I haven't charted the plays but that's what it appears they run no matter who they have played. To paraphrase a wise man, if they can stop what we(Wilson or Richlands) do then they will win, if not we will win. Simple enough.....

Re: Double Wing......Wing T ????

As several of you have pointed out, the presence or absence of McCauley will have a tremendous impact on Wilson's chances. I can't quote any of his exact stats, but I am pretty sure he has scored in the neighborhood of 20 TDs each of the last three years and is definitely a threat to go the distance on any given play.

From the beginning of the year, it just seemed like this was the year that Wilson had been building toward and that if they were ever going to win a state title, then this would be their chance. Yes, Riverheads derailed their chances at a perfect season with a tight 16-14 rivalry clash win, but that doesn't seem to have taken away their focus.

One stat I read in today's paper is that they have only given up 6 touchdowns on defense all season. (A seventh one was scored by East Rock on defense and RHS kicked three field goals in their win.) They had a string of five straight shut-outs going at one time. So instead of focusing on their offense and what it might be able to do to Richlands, maybe the real key will be finding out whether or not Richlands can penetrate that Hornet D any better than anyone else has done.

I agree in one respect about the offense but they have been slow starters at times this season. I am certainly more interested in whether the D can limit Richlands O. I will say again that the LB's are above average but this is probably the most dynamic O they have faced. That matchup will determine the game. As much as this Riverheads fan hates to admit it, they are a very complete team. That said, their D will win or lose this game. The O is not nearly as impressive to me.

Good input guys. Thanks for chiming in. Hope McCauley is able to play. Would love to see both teams at full strength. Richlands may be without their McCauley as well, also a RB. He wasnt much of a factor early in the season in the running game but came on strong in the last couple of weeks before he got hurt. Hasnt played the last couple weeks but like what the coach has done in his absence.

The key players to watch for Richlands:

Offense:
QB #12 River Michaels
Wr/Rb #31 Zeke Vance
Wr #5 Chase Collins
Wr #3 Austin Adkinson
Rb #6 Brandon Waldron

Defense:
Cb #31 Zeke Vance
Lb #52 Canaan Addison
Lb #27 Bryce Wade
Cb #3 Austin Adkinson
S #6 Brandon Waldron

I'm just going to let you guys wonder about him :)

Richlands is the same school that lost to Turner Ashby a few years back in the title game right? Might have been Harrisonburg

They lost to Turner Ashby in 05. Actually went to 3 straight D3 title games from 05-07. Won it in 06. Then were runners up again in 2010.(my senior year, most depressed i've ever been at the end of a football game)

One thing about the Wilson Offense

I'm not sure how familiar you folks from Richlands are with the DW/Wing T, but just know that a 3 yard gain is a solid play for this type of offense. I've seen opposing teams cheer for stopping them for 3 yards, not knowing that their offense likes those drives (so long as they aren't losing by multiple TDs) and the next thing you know they are down around the goal line about to score.

I remember someone on this board saying back when Richlands vs. Bluefield " Watch out if this Blues team can even keep it close with Bluefield you may see them make some noise in December" Richlands beat Bluefield and I think they nailed that statement. Richlands has been kind of one of those weird teams this year..........can beat anyone and can lose to anyone.........just had to see which team showed up. In the playoffs Richlands has been playing lights out. If the Blue come ready to play as they have been I like our chances to win but we have to have our passing game on point like it has been so far in the playoffs.

I actually consider Richlands the favorite going into this game. They've played a pretty tough schedule, and I think their offense will be hard for Wilson's scout team to imitate in practice, whereas Wilson's offense may be a little easier for the scout team to do. With that being said, I hope the Hornets can win this week. I have said since the beginning of the year that this years team is their best shot at a title for the foreseeable future, since they are going to be losing so much to graduation (maybe the future players will prove me wrong though!).

Wilson has a great defense, there team is sr loaded, and they capitalize if u make a mistake, calling for chance of rain for the next 3 or 4 days, so the weather might effect the game, so the game will prob be decided by who makes the least amount of mistakes, and whose defense steps up in the clutch, should be a great game GO BIG RED

Just realized this but out of Richland's 10 reg season opponents 8 of them were playoff teams. Their opponents reg season record, not including their games with Richlands, was 54-36, which included an 0-10 team. Throw that one team out and that record is 53-27. It also included one 2 win team. The three playoff teams they have beaten have a combined record of 27-8.

For Wilson's 10 reg season opponents, 6 made the playoffs. Their record was 49-43. WM also had an 0-10 team. Throw that team out and its 48-32. Also included a 1-9 team. The three playoff teams they have beaten have a combined record of 22-11

Most points scored in a game:

WM 62
Richlands 45

Shutouts

WM 7
Richlands 1

Avg points forced in playoffs

WM 38.6
Richlands 39.3

Avg points allowed in playoffs

WM 4.3
Richlands 16.6

Safe travels to you

I keep one eye on what goes in SW VA (and WV) all season long and am really looking forward to seeing your team. I know you've got a great tradition and your fan support speaks for itself. Drive carefully on the way to the game and I hope we see a good one, as was mentioned earlier, watch your speed around the complex once you turn off of 250, as well as on 250 itself between the interstate and the complex. The state police as well as WWRC police find it a fertile territory for ticket writing.
