Rick Barnes will always have admiration. When he was at Clemson he called out Dean E. Smith for the myth, fraud, and cheat that was. Lots knew it, but none that I know had the b__ls to stand up to him. For that, he has my highest respect.

Thanks for telling us that. I didn't know it. My respect went up to high knowing that.

Having experience in this day and age make e up for alot. It's not that complicated, yeah Barnes is great awesome dipsydoo baby with a capital d baby, the best in the biz, what he does in a watered down college basketball landscape is nothing short of magnificent baby.

I just don't think that Barnes and Texas was the perfect match. He did a decent job in his early years at Texas but everyone knew he needed a change in coaching and Tenn. has been the answer. Coach Barnes is another Head Coach that will go after transfers, grad-transfers, and the JUCO route to mix in with his 3 & 4star players. He has done a great job at Tenn. this year.

Can't coach? SEC co-champs and sweep UK with no oad
But slugger, we have to consider the source. Who said he couldn't coach? Was it just message board fans who wouldn't know the difference (e.g., his team won the game so he's good vs. his team lost the game so he's bad), or was it folks who would know what they were talking about?

Barnes has never had the blue blood job but has been very successful. He gets ribbed a lot on here but he can coach and very well.

I vastly underrated Barnes when he was at Texas. That was due to not paying attention and listening to what the "fake media" said via "Texas is not good = Rick Barnes is not good.

He has done a good job this year, but one year does not define a coach. Let’s see how UT does over the next couple of years. No doubt he has done better than anyone expected this year.

Barnes was a good coach at Clemson and Texas. Why wouldn't he be good now? He may not be at UK, UNC, Duke or Kansas standard but he's like Lon Kruger, he'll win and make the tournament.
If Lon Kruger had just stayed at Illinois or Florida we may think of him by now as one of the elite.

People tend to forget Rick's resume.

Been a HC for 30 years. Had Providence, Clemson, and Texas all making the big dance. Multiple elite 8s, sweet 16s, and a finale four run.

Kruger must know how to nail an interview. Had a bunch of good jobs winning 6 out of every 10 games in his career.

Rick Barnes may be similar to Tubby. Give him good/decent talent and he can make them better.
Give him superstars and he looks like a teenager trying to figure out how to unhook his first bra.
I thought the same when he was at Texas. For some reason he doesn't do that well with a group of five stars.

Everyone in this thread seems on target: great coach. But not quite elite.
Cal likes Rick, which makes me admire him even more

I think that's probably a very fair assessment.

He's basically Tubby Smith. Gets you to the dance every year but doesn't do anything from there. Barnes is always tempting you to start believing in him and then he blows it. I suspect this will be no different.
