Watching on the NFHS Network.

Packed stadium at Union

Ridgeview ran the opening KO back for a TD
Union drove down to about the 30 and threw an INT of 4th down
Ridgeview scores again, 14-0 with a little more than 5:00 to go in the first.

Union responds by breaking big play after big play and scores. 14-6, PAT missed wide right.

Unreal size crowd there tonight.

Wow, game now tied after 1 quarter, 14-14.

Two exciting teams to watch.

I know it’s their tradition, but that Union air horn gets obnoxious real quick!

28-21 Union at the half. Everything you want to see in fun high school game.

Hats off to the Union Sports Network and the announcers. Great commentary without over-doing the hype.

After 3 quarters the score stands at 35-21 Union. The pace has slowed somewhat, but not the intensity.
Ridgeview is methodically working the ball down the field and should close the gap to 35-28.

With about a minute to go, Union has taken charge and pulled out to a 42-21 lead. Great effort on both teams parts.

A couple of notes on the game.

Ridgeview got a lightning start and I'm sure surprised the Union sideline. Their 3 TDs came from big plays, but they never could get a long sustained scoring drive together. That hurt in the 2nd half and allowed Union to wear them down. Ridgeview is a solid team though. Their kicker is committed to Arkansas.

There was a slightly larger crowd last week against Gate City, but what you saw tonight is pretty typical for a home game. It's a football crazed town and the atmosphere is top notch. Probably 3000+ per game depending on how many the visiting team brings.

This was only the 2nd appearance of the train horn in more than a year. I don't think it was at any games last year. It is actually a 3 trumpet horn from a diesel locomotive. A lot of what you hear over the NFHS feed are the cordless drill looking electric horns. Both Ridgeview and Union fans had them tonight. They usually only blow the "big" horn after scores or really big plays.

You could tell it was a great atmosphere. A winning program brings out the fans and substantial fan support, and just about as important, it cultivates support from the business community. But maybe most importantly, it binds the community together in a way that virtually nothing else does.
The result, 3000 plus fans on a Friday night. Great job out there in God’s Country.

BTW, I loved watching #60, Diesel.

Great game indeed, DP. Had it on one of my windows with Phoebus / Bethel on another (plus had the WLSD radio crew of Corey Sanchez and Kevin Mays on my Alexa device in the background)...

More and more I see of Union, the more I'm impressed. Ridgeview is probably a pinch better than I initially thought, too. Thought there might be a bit of a transition stage after record-setting QB Ryan O'Quinn graduated, but they execute rather well.

Would not surprise me if Union is playing for the state title, although there are quite a few really worthy contenders in Class 2 (beginning with our No. 1 ranked team in Glenvar, Armstrong, Poquoson, Strasburg, etc.)...

The Class 2 playoffs could be as compelling as any level in the state this November into December.
