Riek started making noticeable improvement on the court in July. And recently, guard Phil Turner told Johnson, "Scotty, I like playing with him. You throw the ball inside to him, he's trying to dunk everything he gets down there."</p>

Said Johnson, "That made me feel good from the standpoint of, hey, he obviously feels good about where his knee is, because if he's getting it in there and he's trying to go dunk everything …"</p>

Johnson added that Riek hasn't been shying away from contact, as evidenced by a gash on his elbow and then someone else's elbow to his face.</p>

Was Riek waiting academic eligibility or amateur status?

Amateur status, for sure. Maybe both. I think we expect him to be ineligible for a few games stemming from his flirting with the draft a few years ago.
