Right there with Fullerton is something small that would make a ton of difference.

Why is he diving back with his right arm? You use your leftarm on the backside of the bagand youhug your right arm against your body. Gives the 1st baseman less things he can touch to pick you off. Something like that that's so small but would have been the difference betweenFullerton still being on 1st and him getting picked off.

Nobody wants to get hit in face with a dirt ball from the pitcher to first.

momentum from the body coming back into the bag causes you to reach with the right arm. In most cases, depending on the runner, when heading back into first you will drive off your right foot but your second drive is off your left foot. Driving off the left foot and reaching with your left cuts your down your reach by several inches as well as slowing your momentum.This is why it is more important to study pitchers pick off and knowing your limitations.
