spending most of his time on the bench at Murray State. Instead he's getting significant minutes for us, a decent SEC team. Every minute he plays for us is a minute that someone else on our team should be getting playing time. It's frustrating as a fan, imagine if you were a player losing minutes to him. He's clearly Stans' golden boy.
He does exactly what he supposed to do and the coaches don't think he hurts us. I'll take their word for it and if he makes threes and defends, then he is okay. He is resting a starter at guard and that is simple to understand. Lewis is still aproject and he is playing because we have nobody else. Bailey is still not 100% and many times when he is 100% he is not much of a factor on offense. We are playing better, and I predict when Reik is eligible we will be a lot better.
Riley defends well, and he's way more confident in his 3 point shot this year. I don't think he's any more of a liability than Randy Stewart is. If anything, Benock at least makes his open shots. Right now, Riley Benock > Randy Stewart.
Benock was 4-14 from 3. That's 28%. And he's averaging less than 1 rebound per game. He does play decent defense and he doesn't really force anything. People, including me, just feel like he is taking minutes from guys like Osby, Turner, and indirectly Augustus who bring much more to the table.
every time I see him in he seems like a liability on defense. To me, that is where he hurts us, plus his inability to get a rebound. Like you say, he is keeping minutes from somebody that brings more to the table, i.e. Osby, Augustus, Phil.
We're much better off with Osby and Phil getting most of the bench minutes, but I think Rick is still trying to figure out what lineups he likes the best (as he does every year). Hopefully once Riek is eligible we can play bigger more often and not have to use so many guards. If Sidney were cleared that'd definitely be the case. Maybe Wendell's progression will help with this as well. In the mean time, he might as well get minutes while he can. His PT will probably dip in conference play, as it did slightly last year.
