Riley needs to develop a killer instinct

Nearly didn't go for the score before the half, and came out in the 2nd half very conservative, calling a bizarre number of quarterback runs. With OU's defense, Riley should be looking to put points on the board every drive. This is the crap that has let teams hang around several times this season.

A championship coach needs to keep the pedal mashed. I get killing the clock, but keep doing what was effective at a slower pace. The offense looks like it's taking a nap.

To be able to win and basically still have a full tank left in this O is pretty amazing. We need to go for the kill. We just stop running our O and it kills momentum and is so hard on getting started back up again. Our O took our own crowd out of the game. Definitely saved a lot for the big 12 title game since it looks like we will play TCU again.

I do not understand this. We have got to keep the pedal to the metal in these games. Baker was clearly upset with Riley at the end of the half. I can't understand the conservative calls in the second half. Glad to see the defense stepped up. Boomer!

Defense has more of a concern than running up the score and it played great tonight.
OU beat a very good team by three touchdowns. Let's move on.
We led Baylor and Texas by double digits when Riley decided to go into his shell offensively, and both of those ****** teams took the lead. Just saying.

When the defense has been spotty all season (putting it politely), maybe Riley shouldn't think conservative until the clock runs out, or he can put in the backups, whichever comes first.

I hate it when they go into conservative mode the entire second half. Stoops used to pull that crap and almost got us beat a few times. At least wait until halfway though the 4th before we just start running the ball every down.

OU misfired on two 3rd and short plays in the second half which likely cost at least one score, but there are bigger fish to fry coming up and Riley probably wanted to hide some of his weapons in the likelihood his team faces TCU in the conference championship.
Four true freshman started and played well. OU decisively won over a good team. Mayfield survived.
OU’s defensive line showed improvement.
And OU successfully milked the clock in the second half, which kept the defense rested.
Now there are two very winnable games left and next week’s Kansas game should enable Riley to play more backup players.

I was hoping he would not run it up on tcu, we will likely see them again in a few weeks and no need to rub salt in it. Rub the salt in real good the second time around. During the game I was hoping the offense would pour it on but in hindsight it might have been the best strategy to show tcu as little as possible in case we play again in the CCG.

Agree.
I also noticed how much more energy and focus OU's defense played as the game wore on. It always seems that when OU scores a lot, so does the opposition.

I have a question, for which I won't ever get an answer. I'd really like to know how the change in the D Lineup came about. I can't imagine Mikey wised up enough to make it on his own, rather that 'Someone' had to point out to him that his upperclassmen simply WEREN'T getting the job done. Their Struggle Was Real! Regardless of HOW 'The Fix' happened, it's made a Major Difference, and is Better LATE, than NEVER!

Senior, from what I'm seeing, Mann, Lampkin, Gallimore, Faamatau and Overton are collectively getting better and better, and this is without the good veteran Romar, who has been injured. These five will return next year as well as Romar graduates....but then Tyreese Lott, Zac McKinney and Troy James also figure to be in the mix next year. I guess they're redshirting now.
Romar could return by the post season and that would be huge.
Jordan Kelley from Tulsa is, so far, the lone DT on the 2018 commitment list.

Agree, CT, to all of the above...I didn't mean my comment to be 'ALL Inclusive'...I was too hesitant to Call-Out Names, and Take Numbers...I am just SO Happy to see what seems to have been Broken, is getting fixed, or at least being repaired/improved...

Well here's what I see...
The Pokes offense is wide open and the OU plan was to score as many points as they did... wide open.
The Frogs offense they won't beat you via the pass, so the game plan was slowing down the game w/ a run game/ball control game.

Baker ran the ball a few times but come on guys, last night was the Anderson show. OU just beat #6 and with the losses of #1 & #3, OU moves firmly into a playoff spot. Last night's win was solid & a good thing.

I wonder if possibly facing TCU again in the Big XII championship had anything to do with how much we let off the gas in the 2nd half.

no need for Patterson to have even more motivation...hes already a great coach no need to get him ultra fired up...though I agree with it being a momentum killer... we are gonna face these guys again it was a true indication of how many points we can put on anyone...

if we do get in the playoff I wonder how much Bob will be available for Mike....Bob may be the fix you may be talking about...at least from a game planning perspective

I'm okay with running the ball, but running it with Baker over and over? Definitely weird

Without knowing the plays called, my guess is that Baker only had 2-3 designed run plays and the other 8-9 were scrambles last night. Credit TCU for covering our guys, but Baker deserves some credit for getting the job done with his feet when the opportunity presented itself.

However, the boy needs to learn to slide. Every run is a hold-your-breath moment.

Jordan was hurt and Motley was struggling so they sat him. Plus Will Johnson had to sit the first half for targeting against the Pokes.

A friend of mine, who 'sees' things when they are happening, commented that the BM runs were called to counter the pressure being applied by the linebackers.
That is understandable, but two points:
1. Don't call the QB draw 12 times.
2. Baker needs to learn when to slide (Schoonerman's thoughts, too). If BM gets hurt, we become a "pretty good" team, at best.
