The basketball teams are leaving - and they've got enough votes to disband the conference altogether - which would be smart for them, in order to avoid having to pay a $10 million buyout.

Mountain West, MAC, and C-USA commissioners everywhere rejoice.

Should be interesting to see where UConn, USF, and Cinci end up. Really expect the ACC to take 2 of them to be first to go to 16 - and to insulate themselves from their own impending doom.

Going ACC because of their basketball rich traditions. I dont see USF getting an ACC bid bc Miami and Florida State I assume wouldn't let that happen for football recruiting purposes. I guess USF would go back to CUSA? At least that would give Southern MS someone else to play

The really good idea about a Catholic basketball league concept has been out there for a couple of years. I'm just surprised ND didn't stick around to be a part of it.

I think small conferences could sue the NCAA over the 12 member rule for championships. The rule is designed to prevent smaller conferences from holding championships and therefore force them out of the TV market for postseason games. Its a scam to raise revenue at bigger conferences at the expense of smaller conferences. Classic oligopoly stuff.

But don't think that 'small' conferences would really win this suit; already, ACC championship had Ga Tech at 6-6 playing for the championship. Granted, there were two teams on 'probation' but think what 'could' happen with 5 or even 4 teams in a division. Not hard to figure on a 4-8 or even 3-9 team playing for a <quote> championship <unquote>.

they should just pick up BYU and Boise State and call it a day. That would bring them back to a 12 team league and create a championship game again. It also makes sense logistically with the other conference teams.

This is what they should do...

They are really where they were before they made the change plus the only reason they were going to the Big east is because of the automatic BCS bowl game and that all is changing in 2014. Also they were in crappy conferences any way. What they should do is form their own conference and go to ESPN and say look at our TV market. We got San Diego CA with 2 million plus. We have Orlando Florida with 2 million plus people. We have Tampa Florida with 2 million plus people. We have Houston Texas with 2 million plus people. We have Dallas with 1 million plus people. Then add New Orleans and Memphis Tenn. you have a one big TV market. I just don't think it's all that bad for them. Just saying.

It doesn't matter how big the TV markets are if no one in those markets watches any of those teams play. The guy at the Providence RI paper was right. The Big East is just CUSA rebranded and that's all it would be if they did go national like you say they should.

You can't apply "SEC logic" to alot of other conferences when it comes to tv markets, because the content is demanded and watched at a much higher rate in the southeast.

Could you imagine a C-USA network trying to sell itself even locally? It's not feasible for those conferences to go that route. They are at ESPN's mercy in that regard.

Bottom line is that it's a Big5 now - and a "league of 5" smaller conferences(maybe 4 soon). The smartest move by Boise and all these other teams is to (re)join the conferences with the easiest path to the "new BCS" - since there is a slot guaranteed for the highest ranked "league of 5" team in the new setup. If I was Cinci(and the ACC offer wasn't coming), I would be knocking down the door of the MAC trying to get in, and betting that approach would be easier on you than the C-USA or Sun Belt route. At least there, you don't have a geographical disadvantage playing the southern teams...

Florida State, Clemson. I don't see why this is so hard for Slime to understand. The TV bubble will burst, but the quality of the SEC won't....unless he lets it.

Agreed. Texas A&M, Florida State, Clemson, and Georgia Tech should have been the 4. Promote football at all costs and benefit baseball as well as a side note with those schools. We will always be Kentucky and the rest at basketball so who cares. 17 NC 17 VA

we're adding quality as well. Texas A&M was a no brainer in both regards. It's just like government, it works best in the middle. FSU and Clemp are absolute musts, you'd have an unparalleled amount of passion.

GA Tech in the SEC could become very QUALITY after tapping into the Georgia/Atlanta talent that leaves for SEC play. They've done it in the not so recent past.

There WAS a reason - they gambled that your logic would work. The league failed when it didn't fly in tv negotiations. What were all those schools worth in the new Big East? When it STILL had basketball schools, Rutgers, and Louisville, $40-60mil/yr total for the tv contract.... Or significantly less value than aTm adds to the SEC all by itself...

Missouri has done it in the much more recent past than GA Tech has. And GA Tech is never going to come anywhere near matching the draw of UGA with the Georgia recruits, no matter what conference they're in.

Disagree with this whole statement. Missouri hasn't done ****. Other than the 2007 Cotton Bowl season what have they done? From 1984 to 1997 they did not have one winning season. When GA Tech was winning co-National Championships. From '97 the next season with more than 8 wins was that 2007 Cotton Bowl season.

Point being: Missouri has never 'done it' Their program and history doesn't touch Tech's in the past or recently. Tech was in the BCS. I still don't like the Missouri move and probably never will.
