While I have not played the game in years
some of the fondest video game memories that I have are from the knock down, drag out brawls we had in college over this game. As my eulogy to the game, I'll mention my favorite moment from the countless hours that I spent on this game...
During the Fall of '02, my roommates and I played this game in our Academy Village apartment nearly every spare minute that we had. I was far from being a master at it, but I was the best player in the house by a long shot. Anyway, I probably had something along the lines of a 165-0 record against one of them while my other roommate had simply stopped playing me, but just like any good underdog story, there was one magical day when the stars had aligned for the poor sap that I had previously stomped into the ground so many times before.
I don't recall every detail, but I do know that he was up 9 after he had scored a TD with about a minute to go. The game was over, I was fuming, and I was fully prepared to break my 7th Xbox controller of the season. The only thing that kept me in check was seeing how giddy my roommate was as he sat on the couch chugging Dr Peppers and barely able to contain himself. For me, it felt like watching a disabled child sink a layup or getting to throw a football to Jerry Rice. It's hard to be upset about much while watching that happen.
Well, after I fielded the kickoff, I stormed down the field on just a few plays and with just a short amount of time to play, I knew that I only had one shot. I had to kick the field goal, onside it, and then attempt a hail mary for the win. Field goals were nearly impossible to miss on this game so that was no problem, and it came time to line up for the onside kick. I don't know how many of you remember this particular version of NCAA football, but an onside kick gave you about a 1 in a million chance of recovering. There was a better chance of the girls next door(both were extremely hot btw) coming over and getting on their knees at a moment's notice than there was of you recovering an onside kick in this game. Nonetheless, I kicked the ball, his player grabbed it, and I thought all was lost. Except it wasn't... As he started running, one of my special teams aces obliterated his player and the ball popped loose. A few seconds later, I grabbed it and I was down around midfield with 5 seconds to go. Unbelievable...
The only issue now was that even after all that, I still had to thrown a bomb. You might all be thinking hail mary at this point except if there was one thing less likely to happen in this game than recovering an onside kick, it was actually completing a hail mary. You could have Jerry Rice and John Taylor out there, but their hands suddenly turn to stone when you make this play call. So instead of that, I got a little crazy and went for a short screen pass in hopes that my tailback could take it and outrun the cover defense. This play was also a hidden gem of mine because for whatever reason, there were only maybe 2-3 defensive plays in the entire arsenal that would do something other than leave the RB wide open 10 yards down the field when you try to run this one. I used it at least 15 times per game. Anyway, I snap the ball, toss it to my tailback, and in a unbridled frenzy, my roommate just starts constantly selecting the closest player and diving all over the place. I don't think a single player got within 5 yards of me as I pranced into the endzone and won the game.
As much as I wanted to scream and gloat, witnessing the sheer rage in my roommate was reward enough. He dropped a few F bombs, slapped $20 down on the table, and then smashed his(actually my) controller into about a thousand pieces. It was a day that I'll never forget
Here's to you, NCAA football
