and will Tammy stand by her man? Hey, he is one of the all time greats

and will be missed. He was entertaining both on and off the stage.

As a country artist it saddens me that most of today's country music fans will never know what real talent was in country music. They'll never know what it's like to hear the passion or hurt in someone's voice. George was good at that.

Indeed. Rest in Peace, Possum. "Who's gonna fill [his] shoes?"

Who is Jerry Lee Jones? Damnit, I'm stuck at work and all I want to do is have a bottle of whiskey and his music! "But the habit, oh, it's broken, this is Rose's last night."

Or had your IQ measured to be 74 when you went to rehab

THAT is some drinkin'.

Speaking of George Jones: did anybody notice that GMC used "Two Story House" in a commercial? I guess nothing sells pickups like cautionary tales of bleak, loveless mansions.

When I was in the 3rd grade my parents bought a house in Florence Al from his songwriter, Peanut Montgomery. Peanut's wife had done a mural on one of the upstairs bedroom walls and she, Peanut, and George had all signed it. George moved into a newer part of that neighborhood when he was in town recording an album. Me and a friend of mine rode our bikes over to his house to see if we could meet him. He was unloading the trunk of his caddy and motioned us over. Super nice guy. What I remember most were all the guns in his trunk. He must have had 4 full layers of rifles and shotguns, pretty cool for a 7 or 8 year old.

Looks like the Race is Off.

The Race is On was one of my favorite cover tunes that the Grateful Dead did.

I'll have a drank for George today.

He got in trouble with a Monroe County, MS deputy years ago.

He was drunk and run off in my granddad's cotton field on Wolfe Road in Bartahatchie, MS. Got hauled to the pokey.

GF and I had just finished dinner at Mary Mahoney's in Biloxi on January 22, 2011. We were about to go down those few steps as you're heading through the bar area and out the door, and she decides she needs to use the bathroom, which is right there on the left. I'm standing outside the bathroom door at the top of the stairs, when I see this little short man, his wife, and another couple come walking through the bar toward me. Yep, it was the Possum. As they got to the top of the stairs, his wife goes into the restroom, and he's just standing right there beside my shoulder hanging out waiting on his wife. The lady that seats people told him, "Mr Jones, your private room will be ready shortly." I look down at him (I'm 6'5"), and whispered, "are you George Jones?" He looked up and smiled and said "yessir I am", we talked for a few minutes till the women came out of the bathroom, then got a few pictures (he wanted to stand on an upper step with us on the lower step when we took the pictures, so he wouldn't look so short), talked a few minutes more, and went on our way. He said that he had just gotten out of the hospital two days prior to that. I guess that's pretty much my only brush with fame (of that caliber). But, he was VERY nice and didn't talk down to us at all. RIP Possum

Had the good fortune of being close friends with a relative of his when I lived in Nashville. Met him once and talked a good while about life. Anything he talked about he had a great passion for and anyone that spoke with him, he treated as if he knew you for years. He was a good man despite his wild lifestyle. Met him again after the first time a year or two later and he called me by name. I always thought that said a lot about how he treated people. RIP George

How is the music business treating you?

My brother is in a band that had a record contract and could never get any real support from the label. They have been fighting to get out of the deal for a while now. A big 17 your to Toby Keith

Yep, that was prolly late 80's or early 90's. Ole Possum got drunk and had a

wreck in Grubb Springs and waken to the Monroe County SO. I don't think he ever officially was charged but I've been told he was sauced to the hilt.

Alpha, working out a deal with Tate/Interscope now. Could sign as early as Monday. Nashville has been good to me. I've known a few people to get deals and then not really receive much support from the label. Curb is bad about that. Maybe they'll catch on somewhere else pretty soon and get the backing they need.

We may have to play the "do you know" game sometime. I spent about 8 years trying to get my foot in the door on the Row. Did a lot of networking, especially with side players.

Ok, I have two Possum Stories. The first is not mine, but since my father isn't an SPSer but rather on Jeans, I'll share it. The second may be a phantom sighting.

I was probably barely out of the womb in New Orleans. My father took a flight to Augusta, GA because the company he worked for was transferring him, or he was interviewing for another job, hell I don't know, that's not what's important. Anyway, he stayed at a hotel here in town, came back from a long day of interviews, meetings, plant tours, etc. and went to the hotel bar. He's sitting there alone when none other than George, all by himself comes in, and takes the seat next to him. He orders a drink and strikes up a conversation. At first my father thought he was an impersonator, but after talking to him a while, realized he was the real deal. Then George's band, et al, came into the bar as well. They didn't even try to remind him of anything. They just took another table in the small bar and did like George did, proceeded to get hammered. Possum and my father exchanged stories, bought each other rounds, and that was the end of it. The next day, my father wakes up to the headline in The Augusta Chronicle: NO SHOW JONES STRIKES AGAIN! My father knew exactly where he was; drinking with him.

In about 04, my second stint at State (don't ask), my father and I both met in Nashville for the Vanderbilt game. We ended up watching the game from the parking garage, or hotel, not sure what it was, but the top floor of that building that may or may not still look over the stadium from the corner of the endzone. We had tickets but decided to stay there at the Alumni event for they served alcohol. Earlier that afternoon, or the day before, we did the Grand Ole Opry tour. As we were leaving a short man, with white hair, and huge, dark aviators walked by and said, "Afternoon Gentleman, hope you enjoyed the tour." I still have no idea if that was him or not. I'll just tell myself it was.
