Prayers out to his family. Had a monster game in the OU game of 71. So sad to see this as I just watched a great documentary on that game and he was a big part of that too.

I remember as a young lad being at the game back in 1970 he had his best day intercepting Lynn Dickey of Kansas State 5 times and Nebraska winning 51-13.

I have another story of that day that involved my father getting us into the stadium that day but that is another story.

Very sad. Prayers to the family. Joe was a great high school track athlete. When I was wide-eyed freshman, I remember Joe running down the backstretch pulling away from everyone.

I was there; there was a group that thought Dickey would terrorize us - enter Joe.... ;) Speaking of entering ; I was swift of foot that day, joined the Lincoln youngsters in search of seats , outside group stage rush left - beat the friends with tickets to their seats to say Hi.

The year before had a lot to do with that we nearly escaped in Manhattan winning 10-7 with minutes left in the game, so everyone thought this was going to be our toughest game after KSU won 5 in a row in conference play only losing to KU earlier.

Really surprised more people haven't responded to this thread.... Quess it shows the majority of posters weren't even born yet.

I remember Joe's years as a player well. Met him back in the 80's. Seemed like a very nice guy. RIP, sir, you were one of the greats.

It was actually 3 interceptions of Lynn Dickey. Tied Dana Stephenson's single game record, which is why I remember it. Dana was a teaching assistant at my HS and a couple of weeks after Dana's game our HS football coach brought in a film of Dana's game highlights and showed them to the team. Dana was a quiet, reserved guy and was completely embarrassed by the attention.

You're getting old! But seriously, as much as I would like to have those memories it was just before my time. I posted out of respect. But think of it this way. You got to witness the transformation under Devaney. Lucky you!

Complete with a single guy getting 5 picks in one game! That's almost unbelievable. Since there is no way to check that, I will take his word for it since he was there.

You're correct it was 3 interceptions and the blackshirts had 7 total that day...Joe Blahak himself said he had 5 in an interview so that is how I came to that number. You can read it on Husker Max when they interviewed him in 2004.

I would not have remembered but for the Dana Stephenson record. I really liked Dana and I honestly was hoping that day against KSU that Joe wouldn't break Dana's record. Anyone else on the team could have picked Dickey silly, but once Blahak had 3 I wanted him to stop!
