and the plethora of sandwich shops that surround Oby's. And does Oby's even sell liquor in Starkville? I haven't been there in forever because I don't like paying $12 for a sandwich.

the concept of an overpriced sandwich just isn't good business sense. Why people will wrap around the building in Starkville is beyond me. Maybe if they would stop doing that, the Oby's in Starkville would get a better system for ordering.

I think Olga's is BYOB so liquor wasn't the issue I don't think.

Some don't. But many do. You can't have a fine dining restaurant (Olga's) without being able to serve wine. And Olga got in a bit of heat by allowing people to bring their own wine in...so she moved.

Bottom line is: It's silly to allow beer sales but not liquor sales.

the issue with being able to sell liquor and beer is that they have a huge profit margin. the beer sales supplement the reduced margins on other items AND strangely enough in a poor economy alcohol sales typically increase...wonder why...

i agree that an overpriced sandwich concept isn't good business in this economy. apparently though it is a great idea if the economy is doing well and you can convince people that they are getting something that they can't get anywhere else. unfortunately for this business model...it doesn't work often on those like DS and myself. and apparently DS can eat....or that is what HD6 tells me.

has a cult following. there are people, like my uncle who was there in the early 90s, who list oby's as their favorite place in the world to eat. if they trek back to starkville, that's the only place they want to eat. it's a combo of the atmosphere, the food, and reliving your college days for lots of people.

While I agree that it is a little overpriced, it is still good food. and as far as the other sandwich places in flowood, i would usually get a crawfish/shrimp poboy, which not every sandwich place has. the problem, in my book, was that the food wasn't nearly as good in flowood as it was in starkville. the bread always seemed stale and the service wasn't very good. also, the atmosphere is completely different. you can't really franchise places like that, unless your food is great (see dreamland).

and i think what he was saying about the liquor is that the profit margin is so much higher on liquor than on a plate of food, so you're stealing from yourself if you don't sell or allow brown baggers. at a sandwich shop, it's not a big deal, but if you're a steak place, it can make a big difference.

Cerami's on Lakeland still allow you to bring in a bottle.
My wife and I will not go out to eat unless we can have liquor and wine, and I know plenty of others who feel the same.

I know for a fact that Rankin county has lost out on several up-scale hotels and restaurants due to the liquor ban.

On a side note, I had a manager at Mugshots in Starkville tell me that they price their liquor so that the first bottle pays for the rest of the case.

the cost of mixer is negligible. That's a good margin. Plus, one bartender can make drinks for a lot of people, as opposed to a kitchen.

a few months ago saying that they could not allow it. Maybe they just let you do it anyway but had to put the sign up.

bought a fat tire the other night for 5 bucks for a 12 oz. costs 7 for sixer at the store. i sure as hell wouldn't buy a $30 six pack but apparently the bar atmosphere is worth it for me. jeez.

think about how much they make off of a keg. i know a restaurant manager in jackson who gets kegs filled for around $25 and they sell the draft at $2.50 a piece. there are around 170 beers in a keg. you do the math.</p>

So just because you don't care about liquor means you don't want it sold in Rankin county? does it really bother you that bad. It is unreal how the people in Ranking county would rather go spend money at nice restaurants in Hinds county instead of putting the money back into Brandon

it's 15.5 gallons. Still a great profit. When I managed a restaurant we usually paid about $50-$60 for domestic kegs I think.

The food is usually not very consistent. Don't get me wrong, I love the food, but you never know what you're gonna get. Also, the service is ridiculous. I love it when you order at the cash register and one of the cooks yells out of the window about your order and then all the cooks have to get involved. When Oby is not there, the service sucks. When he is there the service is OK.

and Oby's was good, but Bulldog Deli had better sandwiches and better pricing. Flo and Eddie's and The Little Dooey were my favorite places.

My alumni friends and I always go to The Dooey when in town.</p>
