RIP Oby's Flowood...

The Oby's in Flowood was monumentally disappointing, and they did good to last as long as they did. There were times when there was NO air conditioning on, and the portions were small, especially compared to the Oby's in Starkville and compared to the price. If I pay 10 bucks for a sandwich, it either better be really good, or have a nice size portion of food. I used to like the seafood salad, but they told me for about a year that they didn't serve it because "shrimp wasn't in season"- and this despite EVERYONE else having shrimp in the state and THEM serving SHRIMP po-boys. As mentioned, the service was poor, and it felt like I was hanging out at a high school. They probably had college freshmen or high school kids in charge at times, because I sure didn't see any adults very often, at least not mature ones who could run a business.
The desserts were HUGE, but I don't know that that is necessaarily a good thing, because if I'm even halfway full, I don't want to eat a sundae for seven people.
Other than that it was OK.

The Oby's in Flowood did suffer b/c the food was average and was costly. The real killer to me though was the location - you had a Lenny's, Newks, McAlister's all right there and on that list I like Oby's food the least.
Plus you have a Subway going in right there as well. Then I'm sure when they bought the land/building it was at the apex of prices so they were paying a lot of cost in that piece.

I simply stated two things.
1 - I don't like going to Jackson to eat. I'd much rather go somewhere in Rankin County. This was in response to a poster stating that many more restaurants would shut down in Rankin County.
2 - I don't care about liquor. Again, this was in repsonse to the idea that because Rankin County won't allow liquor sales that these restaurants will shut down because people won't go there.
Please find in my post where I railed against selling liquor.

rather than get offended when I dared to suggest there are some people in this world that could care less about drinking liquor at a restaurant. Believe it or not there is some middle ground to this issue rather than just two extremes.

why if you aren't "in to" alcohol all that much, people think that you're some holy roller. If you don't want alcohol, and don't drink it because you don't want to, and don't outright condemn people that do, I don't understand the problem.
not being a smartass, but that is usually the reason. Not always, but it's why people assume that.
the best restaurants you will see in Rankin county are chain restaurants.....the bonefish grills, and the mellow mushrooms of the world.....they are good, not great....chain restaurants are about the only ones that can survive without the liquor and wine sales......I live in Madison, and the best restaruants are in Jackson, Ridgeland, and Madison.....and I dont think it is coincidental either......look at the top restaurants: Shapley's, Tico's, Walker's (my personal favorite), Schemmel's, Bravo, Parker House.....you dont see those types in Rankin county......good food needs good drink.....until rankin county wises up and allows liquor and wine sales in restaurants, they will never see the economic prosperity of the restaurant industry.....at least, above that of a sandwich shop and deli....I would certainly hate to see Rankin County to turn out to be such a ****** community like Madison because it allowed alcohol sales....

I absolutely despise WFCA! They block out every Budweiser, Pearl River Resort ad with a message basically saying drinking and gambling are a sin. They also block out the part of Haley Barbour's visit "Missippi" commercial where he encourages people to visit the "casinas." If I were any of these 3, I would be pissed and would want a cut on my advertising dollar with the school.

People usually accuse religious people of being intolerant and judgemental but typically it's the other way around. (Not accusing you of anything OP4 or even directing this comment towards you at all, just making an observation in general.)
New Belgium's 1554 black ale is tasty. To bad you can't get it in Mississippi. I have a friend who procures it for me. We need to up the percentage here badly.

Jesus guy, settle down. I apologize for misreading your post. And there will be places in rankin county that will not be able to stay open because they cant sell liquor. There will never be nice steakhouse in the county because you cant sell wine. It might not factor in your decision of where to go eat but it will factor in to many people's decisions. People in this town referring to Jackson Metro area love a chain. Chain restaurants can buy their food for much cheaper and if they are run right (i.e. Bonefish grill) the food is not that much of a step down from say Parker House but the price to the consumer is night and day.
Next time you go out to eat, just remember yeah you can get your food for much cheaper if you go to a chain restaurant, but you're not doing any favors to our local economy. The small family owned restaurants in the Jackson area that don't have a reputation built up like Tico's and Parker House will be the first to go in this economy, because people would rather save a buck or two and eat at a chain...

Flowood also lost out on a Costco because of the ridiculous liquor ban according to the Flowood Chamber of Commerce. Wine and liquor make up a large part of Costco's profits. I would assume it's the same with Sam's Club, but I heard yesterday that a Sam's Club is going to be built in Rankin County.

......screw a chain restaurant.....cheap food = nasty food.....My brother in law owns a very successful food marketing business in jackson and is going to new orleans, and we just had this discussion last weekend.....Tico's got its reputation for serving good steaks......Walker's got its reputation for its Redfish Anna......you think places like El Dorado steakhouse will ever get the reputation as Tico's.......never.......Tico's serves better quatlity meat, and, I will tell you, any restaurant serving a bake potato with a steak, is no restaruant at all.......Tico's Walker's Shapley's Parker House......all good steaks...and not a damn one of them will dare serve you a cheap bake potato and pre mix salad.....they understand good food needs good food chemistry.....which includes good drink....aka wine.....you will never see anything like that crap *** Rankin County, and their 'sweet tea and bbq ribs'.....I despise chain restaurants like you say, but I will not support the small family owned restaurant that serves **** *** food....all the restaurants mentioned above are locally owned, and serve good food, and I will support them **** Im drunk....i gotta get off this soapbox
