It’s been effectively dead for years. Still sad, though. Some incredible writers came through there.
What they deserve for caving and putting lardasses in string bikinis in their ****** magazine.
Put those adiposauruses in a one piece with the little umbrella that covers their fupa and nobody likely ever cares much. But no…. Gotta fein the idea that somebody gives a **** and wants to see that mess.

Was a subscriber for years and years and read it pretty much cover to cover but dropped it a long time ago.
As I recall, one reason I quit was that they focused more and more on professional sports, which frankly have never been that interesting to me, at least compared to college.
One of my favorite issues was 2 weeks or so after the swimsuit issue when they would print all the hate mail. Was absolutely hysterical.

It's probably the fault of white men and boys for not wanting to look at the magazine anymore. Shame on all of us males for buying it many many years ago when they had an actual fkn clue what we wanted to see. I'm consistently amazed at what corporate decisions are made to sink brands and bellcows. The race to the bottom continues

I read SI until I got the internet. Free highlights and pictures of boobs as far as the eye can see.
There were some legendary models on the cover, Cheryl Tiegs, Elle McPherson, Paulina Porizkova, Christie Brinkley, just off the top of my head

Completely forgot about Cliff Hawkins making the cover of one of these. I know a guy who collects the Kentucky ones and has many of them autographed by the former UK players. Don't think he has this one.

Not sure what political conservatism has to do with any of THAT though.
I look at it this way: anything sitting on a table in a dentist's office or where you got your hair cut in 1993 would be lucky to still be around in 2010, yet alone 2024. It's not really an institution any longer when everyone waiting has a phone worth several hundred dollars in their hand scrolling through apps and various sites.
This was my first issue of SI. My mom always encouraged me to read and was more than happy to get me a subscription. I kept it, and added The Sporting News and Cat Paw over the years until the internet came along.

Loved MAD too. CRACKED was okay, but MAD was much better.
Forgive me, I was mostly joking about the few people who would point to the recent (albeit poor) decisions to include larger women, Martha Stewart and a transexual. Even though those seemed more like desperation plays to draw in a new target audience since it's existing audience was dwindling.
And, no, I literally meant the type of people who passionately order magazines to read at home rather than in an electronic format are reaching the later stages of life. That isn't a political statement as much as a demographic truth.

In it's prime, MAD Magazine was the best political satire, and for a long while, the only ACTUAL political satire going. I was damn near raised on it. Getting an unvarnished, and cynical/realistic view of the world wasn't easy in the early 70's, but MAD filled the void. And also, cartoon big boobs. LOL

For some reason, you can still find editions of Mad Magazine at Whole Foods, of all places. But they are stupidly expensive.

SI does have a website. The same writers published on that platform as the print copy. If their business model relied so heavily on the print publication in 2024, that's was a poor strategy.
Posting swimsuit covers and complaining about trannies is fine too I suppose. I said similar about ESPN layoffs. Yes, they added political talking points to their programs which was incredibly stupid but the bigger problem was paying some of their hosts millions as if the viewer is there for them, not sports. And two, I can't imagine waiting for SportsCenter when we have instant access to replays, winning shots, and brutal injuries in seconds. With social media, we're all experts, so who cares what Around the Horn or PTI has to say from now on.
As we age, we're seeing the end of things we grew up with. WoKeNeSs and diversity aren't killing these things. That's just a right wing talking point to shift make believe blame against progressives. Sorta like the gif of the guy spilling his popcorn then looking up with anger and saying "Thanks Obama!" Take a gander at a calendar (on your phone, not on your wall because who still has wall calendars? Hopefully the wokeness didn't kill wall calendars).
