He made a great impression in 1979 when we stopped in D.C. for a tour of the Capitol while on a Gulfport-based student trip. We were on a 3 week tour of the country via Greyhound bus and asked if we could speak with the Mississippi Senator. He dropped everything and went out of his way to show us around the Capitol. Very cordial and sincere man.
RIP Senator

He got a little crony-ish late in his career, but he was great for our state and great for our university. RIP

he was good for bringing money into the state of Mississippi that would have gone elsewhere otherwise. Not a lot of people realized how much power and clout he had especially while serving as Chair of the appropriations committee. i'm afraid Mississippi already misses him in DC. great senator for the state that will be missed. RIP.

He was in DC for 40 years. The problems this country is facing today just did happen in last 2. In my younger years Thad and Trent were at the top of my list in respect. Now its very evident they were on the sidelines with their heads turned the other way...........This has nothing to do with political!

I disagree. About Thad, anyway. Trent Lott is another discussion.

They both realized (smartly) that they could not change the system, they could only go with it and try to look out for Mississippi the best they could. If they had tried to fight the power, the only people who would have suffered would have been the people of Mississippi.

It is regretful that you have that misguided opinion.

I agree that the system is broken beyond recognition, but how to do you about fixing it by going along and enabling it?

If Charles Evers hadn't run for the Senate in '78, I highly doubt Cochran would have ever been elected. Maurice Dantin would have been elected.

Compromise makes our system of Government work and there is zero compromise in DC these days, therefore nothing productive happens. The ability to compromise at one time was considered as a characteristic of a Statesman. Thad Cochran was an agent of compromise in Washington for 30 plus years. Unfortunately the far left & far right fringe nut-jobs now judge politicians based on a few litmus test issues and anyone who encourages compromise is ostracized. Thad was not nearly as effective the last 10 years in office as earlier in his career for a variety of reasons including health & age, but history especially Mississippi history will be very kind to him.

I used to HATE Trent Lott for the all the pork barrel he helped bring to Mississippi. One time he was speaking on campus at MSU and I point blank asked him why he was responsible for so many tax dollars coming to our state. While the state needed it, it was still more and more tax dollars of the American public.

He made his point thusly: "While the pie (the budget) is being made, I work like crazy to make sure it is as small as possible, keeping close to our conservative principles. But make no mistake, once the size of the pie has been determined, you bet your tail I'm going to do everything I can to make sure Mississippi gets as big a slice as possible."

From that day forward, I was cool with Trent.

Exactly. He was great on compromise. Not enough of that these days. Too much gridlock and opposite ends of the spectrum butting heads. It’s supposed to balance but have to have those in the middle to compromise to bring it to balance otherwise it is just stalemate.

And thanks to Lott’s and Cochran’s longevity they built up a ton of seniority thus giving Mississippi a huge advantage in getting money. And for the people that say they spent alot money on “pork barrel”, that money would have gone somewhere else in some other state.

Yep. In 1978, Cochran wins election to the Senate because African-Americans supported an Independent African-American candidate.

And in 2014, Cochran wins the Republican Senate runoff contest thanks in large part to African-Americans voting for him.

My DC visits with TC and TL left me me with this: TC had time and was very personable. TL was full of himself.

Why don't you enlighten us on specific ways he missed the mark. Maybe you will convince someone to agree with you.

That's what they all were elected to do, bring home the bacon to their constituents.
MS, AL and LA get more federal spending per capital than any other state, is it fair? probably not.
