I’m not old enough to have watched him play. I think his career was ending about the time I was born. He did very few media requests or interviews but a year or two back he was in St Louis and they had him in the booth for a couple innings and I really enjoyed listening to him. He said the difference between him and ownership (Gussy Busch I guess at the time) as far as him staying with the Cardinals was $5000. Talk about letting a gem get away.

Staying with the Cardinals? I'm confused. Tom Seaver's biggest association with St. Louis is that he no-hit them once and that he got his 3,000th strikeout against them (the great Keith Hernandez to be specific). Seaver never pitched for the Cards.

He pitched for my favorite team, the Reds, for about 5 years starting in the late 70's. As a kid that was about 10 at the time, I can remember being very excited about Seaver joining my team.

To age myself, when I was 12 I KNEW that I could hit any pitcher in the world. Not necessarilly for a base hit, because I wasnt that strong. But Seaver was the one I imagined myself going against.

And no. I wasnt that good. I was just that cocky about my baseball ability at that age. I couldnt imagine striking out EVER.

Tom seemed like baseball purity to me.
