Just to put a wrap on this one, Riverheads used its patented ball-control offense to build the 24-0 halftime lead, as they scored on all four possessions, and then finished off the Trojans with a couple of defensive TDs. The Gladiators played turnover-free ball themselves and there were very few penalties on either team.
As reported above, the Big Red took the opening kickoff and drove about 85 yards on 13 plays, which proved they were controlling the line of scrimmage. Then when they held Essex to a three and out on its first possession, it certainly wasn't over, but the handwriting was already on the wall.
Dameron came as advertised and he certainly did all he could do as a running back and receiver, but RHS was just too poised and too disciplined tonight. The closest the Trojans came to scoring was midway through the second quarter. Riverheads was leading 17-0 at the time and if the Trojans could have scored before halftime, it might have been a closer game.
Instead they were turned away at about the 20 with just under five minutes to go. To add insult to injury, the Gladiators then drove down the field in the remaining time and put the nail in the coffin with just 10 ticks on the clock.
On Essex's first possession of the second half, they moved the ball to midfield and a first down before being dropped for huge losses on two consecutive plays. Then on the third play, Jeffery Maddox picked up the fumble and took it to the house to make it 31-0 and the visitors never threatened after that.
I believe Schaefer scored all three of Riverheads' offensive touchdowns, but Hostetler and Jordan may have actually rushed for more yardage. Nobody broke off a really big run all night, but the two of them had some nice mid-range runs. The Gladiators had almost 300 yards on the ground by halftime, but due to the way the second half went, they probably did not finish with more than about 350. Their only pass attempt of the night was batted down.
Just a good solid win, one that shows the Gladiators are focused and ready to go as far as they can in the playoffs. I am also encouraged by Stuarts Draft's two huge wins in the 2-A playoffs, because that makes the Big Red's effort against them all that much more impressive. The announcers were saying tonight that they would love to do a double-header in Salem that Saturday, and who knows... it just might happen!
