Riverheads at Wilson to Highlight Next Shenandoah Slate

The Hornets certainly helped their own cause with Friday's win over Stuarts Draft, which was of course their goal. But that win threw the district standings into a tizzy as there is now a four-way tie for third, with Wilson, SD, Luray and East Rock all now 2-2 in the district.

I still have confidence in my Gladiators coming out on top at the end and just as much confidence in Buffalo Gap running the table the rest of the way to finish 9-1 and in second place. The question of who finishes third through sixth is really not that important since the state rankings determine playoff seeding, but it will be an interesting race anyway.

I don't see any of the four getting hot and winning all the rest of their games. For one thing, only Luray is finished with both Gap and Riverheads, but the thumping they took at Gap Friday would seem to indicate that they are a beaten team now instead of one that might still make some noise.

So any game from here on out that matches any two of those four should be interesting and I think we will end up with two of them tied at 4-3 and two others tied at 3-4. As for who goes to the playoffs and who doesn't, that is too unpredictable to call at the moment. I would assume that SD is in unless they collapse completely, and chances are Wilson will shoot way up after Friday's win. Therefore ER and Luray could be the ones on the hot seats.

Looking ahead to this Friday (23rd), first of all it looks as if we may have another decent night weather-wise but of course that could change. As for the four games on the docket, Buffalo Gap and Stuarts Draft hit the road to Stonewall and Page respectively. Neither should have any trouble so there is little more to be said about those two games.

East Rock goes to Luray in one of those match-ups I just mentioned between those four teams stuck in the middle, and just like all of them will be, it is a toss-up. I saw each of them host Riverheads and if I were to base my prediction just on that, I would have to go with the Eagles. They at least stuck with RHS for a half, whereas the Gladiators took care of Luray early. Then there is the matter of the earlier-mentioned beatdown at Gap. So I will go with East Rock but it will be close.

That leaves of course Riverheads at Wilson as the feature game of the week, as if it would not have been anyway. The Gladiators look better on paper, but then I would have thought the same thing about Stuarts Draft on Friday. Wilson will come in with its confidence through the roof, and deservedly so. The game will simply come down to a question of whether the Wilson D can figure out RHS as well as they have most other teams this season. If I am not mistaken, 18 is the most they have given up to anyone, whereas Riverheads has scored at least 21 in all seven games, and 35 or more on everyone but the Gap.

Therefore something will have to give. I think I will keep my prediction, which is written down elsewhere, to myself for the moment until I see what other folks are saying. But it will certainly be just as big an event as all their other recent match-ups have been. Is it Friday yet?

That is correct. We gave up 18 in the season opener to Waynesboro.

What intrigues me is since 2004, though we haven't won as many of the matchups we always seem to be a thorn in the side of the team from Greenville; with only the 2004 and 2008 games being blowouts.

Only time will tell. Maybe we can just shock the county again.

Still no predictions on the "feature" game in the district? On average over the time period Trevor mentioned, the difference is roughly 13 if we win, 5 if they win. Should be a good matchup, although I would like us winning with a running clock myself, lol.
I am holding out until later this week for my prediction on the score. What is the knowledgable posters on the board think about the score?

ps. Trevor, I threw out '04 (49-18 us) it messed with the average too much.

I have no idea what to predict honestly.
I have faith in our defense, but they will need our offenses best effort. If they are kept on the field too long it won't be good for us

Could be another disappointment for the red team. Wouldn't be the first time we ruined your perfect season

I don't see a shut out either. I am interested in multiple underlying tendencies/quirks? Will Wilson kick field goals if they get down close unlike last year at the Hay Field? Will either team go unconventional and pass more than 1 time? Will either team punt once they get into opponents territory? And one of the biggest questions, who wins the turnover battle? Lots of things to be answered for both teams. I hate the Hive but can't wait to be there Friday.

Still no scores listed in this thread......

It is worth pointing out that Riverheads could easily have had two shut-outs this season. I think they held Covington scoreless until after the second string defense came in and I distinctly remember that Luray still had a goose egg on the board until the final three seconds of the game.

So you need a prediction huh? Oh alright. I see about a 2-3 touchdown margin between the two. But as someone else mentioned, each team has a capable field goal kicker, so scores from them could be a factor.

Because of Wilson's defense, I don't see a wide-open game like a 49-35 deal. Instead I expect RHS to score first, probably lead the entire way, but never quite be able to really put it away like they have most other games. But yet I do think they will exceed that maximum of 18 that Wilson has allowed. So depending on who is kicking the field goal, I will go with something like a 28-10 or 31-14 win for the Big Red.

I will be quite surprised if RHS really puts it to them and runs away with it, but if they insist that is the way it has to be, I will accept that. At the risk of raising Trevor's blood pressure, I just don't see a Wilson win in the cards, based mainly on what we learned about Johnson being absent from the Draft game last week and from the many turnovers that one sounded like it had. No offense to either team, but it just sounded like kind of an ugly mess to tell you the truth. But keep in mind, all I did was read the newspaper accounts of it.

Now that the ice is broken, 24-7 Red Pride. First half field goal so we get the points on the board. Wilson D will tire and start missing tackles late. Wilsons score comes late against our 2nd team and still takes an extended drive to get it done. Order is restored in the SAW area!!!!!!

Wilson Memorial takes the opening kickoff to the house taking a 7-0 lead. They then force a turnover after the team from Greenville drives deep into Hornet territory. Surprisingly Wilson throws together a long time consuming drive taking up the rest of the 1Q. Early into the 2nd Wilson Memorial scores taking a shocking 14-0 lead. RHS answers before the half to go down 14-7 in the half. Following an opening drive TD the score is 14-14. RHS muffs punt giving Wilson a short field. A Mcbee field goal gives Wilson Memorial a 17-14 lead that they hold an upset Rival RHS.

Okay that's the way I dream it happening!

As for what may really happen..RHS should be a 2TD favorite. But strange things happen in rivalry games as Michigan and Michigan State reminded us last week!

I saw Riverheads play against Lee in the opener and then saw Wilson for the first time since the Lee game last Friday night (longest stretch between Wilson games in many years). I like the way our kids played hard and didn't get down after giving up that kickoff for a TD. And yes, the game was a sloppy one, seems like the ball was bouncing all over the field at times. This old Hornet takes WMHS in a wild one, 20 to 19.

You do know a majority of Wilson Memorials students don't live in Teaverton right? ;)

The team from Greenville may beat us Friday but it won't be 36-0

It's funny how you call us out on a year in which we accomplished more than you.

That would be like a Yankee fan downing the Mets this year if they lose the World Series. You can down us for the years you accomplished more.

It's interesting how easy it is to get everybody riled up. Rings, who went further in PO's, shut outs, JV squads performance. I just love to read this stuff and I am a fan of one side.

Look, Wilson won 3 games in two years (2 in 2012) and have kept the others reasonably close. The Wilson football game does not define the Red Teams season. The only time it was remotely close to being a defining game was the PO game in 2012 when Casto went for two on a freaking pass play instead of tying it and going to overtime. It seems like Wilson fans are obsessed with the outcome against us and since we downplay it, they get pissed off.

Take it this way, I am a Cavs fan but if we beat the Hokies I can only talk so much junk. We are not in the discussion at any point for being a superior ACC team. How serious can we be taken when the scales are so lopsided and have been for years? I hate to admit but VT had a great run nationally and of course within the state. I think they are on the tail end of that but still dominate my Cavs consistently. This is the only equitable analogy I can come up with.

Will Wilson "shock the county"? It's possible, but not probable. We will see Friday for this year.

Some will never give give another team credit but the group that graduated last year was very special. Is there another assembly of that much talent coming through Fishersville? Who can say for sure? All indications are there isn't but of course people move, kids develop, and coaches change. Just my .02

People get there feelings all in a bunch! I just take it as good ol fashioned sports trash talk!

Like I said in another post, there is only one football dynasty in our area currently. I don't like them but I'm not going to discredit them at all.

I think that's what gets so many other Wilson folks all riled up. They feel others still don't get the team it's due from the past four years because they never brought home the trophy.

It is what it is. I will see all you fine folks tomorrow!

I guess I should not expect perfection from our local papers but did you guys see the N-V today? Good grief!

They have a very nice article about the intensity of the rivalry and it seemed to be accurate for the most part. But along with it, they ran a photo with this caption...."Wilson Memorial's Savant Swift scores the winning touchdown in overtime against Riverheads in 2014."

First of all, we all know that Riverheads won last year's game 16-14, which was reported accurately in the article itself. Secondly, without checking my records, I don't think we have had an overtime game with Wilson in quite some time. Even the 22-21 classic in 2012 went just the regular four quarters. So they just completely made up that bogus overtime game.

Earlier this season, the same paper previewed the Waynesboro/Riverheads game and said that Waynesboro's home field advantage would be offset by the huge crowd that Riverheads would bring, when everyone knew the game was being played AT Riverheads.

Then there was the preview of the Lee/Waynesboro game recently in which they gave the advantage in coaching to Lee because "Tibbs is in his 20th season and knows how to win."

But maybe I had better go easy on them. If we win tonight, they might twist it around and make it look like a loss.

Correction.........there is only one time you should use the Capital R on here..........for Riverheads of course. The "r" you are referring to is a little r. But your sentiment is right on target.....wonderful weather with no r in sight, and it won't be too c, and apparently very little w.

Perfect night for plenty of TDs for the Big Red!!!! and we might let you score one if you are good.

There's also a concert going on at WWRC in the auditorium tonight - not sure what kind of crowd they're expecting, but everyone should be aware of the possibility of increased vehicle and pedestrian traffic around "the post".

Watch your speed in the complex. Leaving is never a problem but getting to the game is. If you are pulling for the red team, speed limit is 55.
