Once again I am watching from home, so I will chime in from time to time to let you know what is happening in Greenville. Stay tuned!!!
Bison drive 68 yards with opening kickoff, on the ground. Goff scores and they add two pointer. Clock not functioning. Estimated 2-3 minutes left. RHS jumped offsides three times.
End of one. After a short kickoff, RHS has already driven down to the Bison 17.
Fitzgerald goes for 16, Edwards sneaks it in. Fitzgerald adds conversion. 8-8 just seconds into the second quarter.
Bison were driving but RHS stripped the ball and McCauley took it in. But a strange block in back call nullified it. They still scored eventually on another Edwards sneak. Williams kick makes it 15-8 midway through second quarter.
Strasburg ahead of SD already 28-0.
Bison at the RHS 5 with 39 seconds left and an injured player.
Goff scores but conversion fails. 15-14 RHS with 36 seconds left.
Gladiators don't gamble. 15-14 at the half with Riverheads due to receive. Neither team has even attempted a pass. BG's switching offense frustrated the Big Red early but they seem to have adjusted. On that second RHS score, McCauley was wide open and heading for the end zone all alone, so the block in the back flag was totally unnecessary. Announcers said they didn't see it They scored anyway, so it is a moot point. Clock apparently still not working. They have to estimate after every play but the PA announcer is giving the official time frequently. Hard to tell who might have the upper hand. Bison offense has been more grind it out whereas RHS has had a couple of longer runs. Neither team is giving the other a chance on kickoffs. I like the chances of whatever team scores next.
Bison recovers muffed kick on RHS 43. Goff has big run right up the middle.
Goff scores untouched from the 33 and adds the conversion. 22-15 Bison with Big Mo on their side.
RHS gambles on their own 43 and Bison stuff it. BG first down at the RHS 40.
Goff goes around right end for 30 yards and his fourth TD of the night. Conversion fails. Bison 28-15 midway through the 3rd.
Bison forced a punt this time but RHS got a good roll. Bison ball around their own 30. 4:25 left in the third. While I was typing, BG just had a big run into RHS territory by Reid and then added a RHS penalty. Bison in business again at the RHS 28.
Bison finally threw a pass and got inside the 10. Goff's fifth TD makes it 35-15, still in the third. Barring a miracle, the Bison have finally broken their losing streak to Riverheads.
End of three. RHS' only hope is to become the kind of big play team that they simply are not.
Did I speak too soon? Fitzgerald streaks down the far sideline for 59 yards. Two point conversion fails. 35-21 with almost the entire fourth quarter to go.
On 4th and 1, Goff drags defenders 20 yards. Obvious player of the game.
Goff scores his sixth. This time they kick the PAT. 42-21. 6 minutes left.
You can't make this stuff up! The Bison were in kill-the-clock mode and facing a 4th and 4. There was a fumble in the backfield and instead of a turnover, Goff picked it up and rumbled up the middle for his SEVENTH touchdown of the game. Less than a minute left it is 48-21.
Well it is over. To say the Bison wanted this one and deserved it would be an understatement. They just made the adjustments they needed and came up with a game plan that Riverheads simply could not figure out. Now they go on the road again next week, which will suit the heck out of them, since all three of their playoff wins have come in enemy territory. The opponent will most likely be Essex, a team that Riverheads has always been able to handle. So I like the Bison's chances to do the same thing and make their first trip to Salem since the Pickle Days of 2007.
As for Riverheads, it is hard to put a positive spin on such a butt-whooping, but they were young this year, and next year they will not have to contend with Goff........or Jones........or Jordan.......or Moore. Not only that but they had an outstanding JV team this year. So even though none of us will remember me saying this, the Gladiators just might return to their former glory as early as next season.
Last news of the night......the Strasburg final was 54-7.
