The news around the Riverheads varsity this season has been about its youth and specifically how quickly the two freshmen phenoms, Avery Glover and Chesney Dunlap, have adjusted to varsity level play. That was clearly on display in tonight's game against Page as each one knocked down a corner triple in the first quarter to stake the Big Red to a 14-4 lead, and they never looked back on the way to a resounding 64-32 victory.
Once the Gladiators seized control of the game, they widened the margin to the point that the running clock was put into effect. Sophomore Abi Bennington and Kallie Poole, the Big Red's only senior, joined in the three-point parade along the way, and although I did not count them I would guess they hit somewhere in the 8-10 range in the surprisingly easy romp.
The only thing that was cause for concern, and it turned out to be a non-factor, was foul trouble. The Gladiators only dressed out eight girls tonight and when it became evident early that the game was going to be called tight, it made you wonder how long some girls would last. To the best of my recollection, no one fouled out, but I am pretty sure that one Lady Gladiator ended the game with four fouls and at least two others had three fouls.
The Gladiators are now off until January 6th, when both boys and girls will continue Shenandoah District play, with most games being on Tuesday and Friday. On that Tuesday, the RHS girls will travel to Fort Defiance and the boys will host the Indians.
