Although it was pouring the rain most places this afternoon and evening, it was bone dry and very pleasant in Greenville, allowing county rivals
Buffalo Gap and Riverheads a perfect night to match their Middle School and JV teams. In a pair of games somewhat similar to RHS' trip to Stuarts Draft last week, the Bison won the opener 8-0, before the Gladiator JVs pounded the Junior Bison 36-0 in the nightcap.

The Middle School game would have to be considered a step forward for Riverheads, although the loss was quite frustrating. That is because the Gladiators completely controlled the action in the first half and spent the entire time in the Bison half of the field. They stayed on the ground for one especially promising drive of the night and were facing a 4th and goal from the one, but could not punch it in.

However, they held the Bison and forced a punt, which they downed at the Gap 18, giving themselves one more golden opportunity to score. However, this time the Bison forced a fumble. On the very next play, Gap 7th-grader Jackson Robertson got to the edge in front of his own bench and outraced the Gladiator defense for an 83-yard scoring run. Other than that one big play, and Riverheads' near misses, neither team had any serious scoring chances.

The JV contest, as you can tell from the score, was Riverheads all the way as the Gladiators led 24-0 at the break and had the running clock in effect by the midway point of the third quarter. Jackson Stuples and Tanner McCray were the main offensive weapons as they combined for the first 30 points of the game on four TDs and three two-point PATs. Stuples' three-touchdown explosion included an 82 yard run on the Big Red's first play from scrimmage, and a brilliant broken-field return of the second half kickoff.

Once those two retired for the evening, the Big Red got its final TD from Jimmy Johnson, along with some hard running from Kalvin Huffer. Kalvin also factored into the Big Red's defense as he booted consecutive kick-offs in the third quarter that were so short and squibbly that the Bison could not handle them and RHS recovered.

With the win, the Big Red is now 2-0 but also unscored upon. Their next game is Wednesday of next week at Wilson and I am also told that they have picked up another game, a home contest with Page County on Wednesday the 30th.
