Ole Roger the Dodger, he took some licks and was a tough sob. Pro QB's today

have no idea what those guys faced.

Yeah, those old guys totally faced sophisticated defenses filled with 300lb guys who can run a 4.8 40, bench press a bus, and get paid tens of millions to stop and in some cases injure starting QBs...

I know we`ve all been conditioned to understand that "role model" and "great professional athlete" are not synonymous. BUT this guy truly was/is a role model IMO. I`m happy for him.

Playing NFL QB these days is about like playing a video game. Yeah today's

defenses a big, quick and sophisticated but they better not hurt the QB or somebody is gonna be in hot water.

In Roger's day they tried to kill him every play.

how many of us can relate to this?

Starr attended Sidney Lanier High School in Montgomery, Alabama.[SUP][11][/SUP] He tried out for the football team in his sophomore year, but decided to quit after two weeks. His father gave him the option of playing football or working in the family garden; Starr chose to return to the football field.[SUP][12][/SUP]

I met him once.....

I attended and graduated from Marine Military Academy Harlingen TX in 1983 and that year the Houston Oilers and Dallas Cowboys played an exhibition basketball game for the cadet corps. Roger didn't play but he was there to give a motivational speech. Very personable man. I got to shake hands with him and you could tell everyone of his fingers had been broken probably multiple times. Not a straight finger on either hand and large knots on his joints.

Also met Billy Jo Dupree, Drew Pearson and Earl Campbell. Earl had the biggest legs I've ever seen on a human being.

a lot of them buy depreciable assets like cars or they end up buying overpriced houses. They then blow a ton of it on food, parties, booz, furniture, trips, etc. Follow that up with the leaches and some bar/restaurant investments that aren't scalable and you get broke people in 5 to 10 years.

Favorite quote about Earl Campbell. If you remember Earl took for ever to get

up off the ground and get back the huddle after he was tackled. One day some sportswriter was complaining to Bum about this and Bum responded, "Yeah, it also takes him a long time to ever hit the ground with the ball in his hand, I'll take it".

Other great Bum Phillips Quotes:

  • "There's two kinds of coaches, them that's fired and them that's gonna be fired."[SUP][4][/SUP]
  • "I always thought I could coach. I just thought people were poor judges of good coaches."[SUP][5][/SUP]
  • "I've never seen a hammer and tong game like that one."
  • "The harder we played the behinder we got."
  • "Mama always said that if it can't rain on you, you're indoors." (Explaining why he wouldn't wear his cowboy hat in a domed stadium)
  • "Dallas Cowboys may be America's team, but the Houston Oilers are Texas' team."
  • "I never scrimmage Oilers against Oilers...what for? Houston isn't on our schedule." (Source: The Book of Sports Lists)
  • (To an official) "Hey, can I, can I tell you one thing? That's three holding penalties on one football team in a quarter and a half. (Pauses) That ain't funny."
  • (To an official) "Now, you can't do that! If you do it, I'm telling you you'll have more hell over it than a little bit."
  • (after playing the Steelers for the fifth time in two seasons and planning to meet them a sixth time) "The road to the Super Bowl runs through Pittsburgh, sooner or later you've got to go to Pittsburgh.[SUP][6][/SUP]
  • (20 years after playing Pittsburgh six times in two seasons) "Don't take long to spend all the time you want in Pittsburgh."[SUP][7][/SUP]
  • (referring to Miami Dolphins coach Don Shula) "He can take his'n and beat your'n and take your'n and beat his'n."[SUP][8][/SUP] He also said the same line about Bear Bryant.[SUP][9][/SUP]
  • (referring to Houston Oilers quarterback Warren Moon) "That boy could throw a football through a car wash and not get it wet."
  • (when asked about Oilers RB Earl Campbell's inability to finish a one-mile run in training camp) "When it's first and a mile, I won't give it to him."
  • (when asked by Bob Costas why he took his wife on all of the Oilers' road trips) "Because she's too ugly to kiss goodbye."[SUP][10][/SUP]
  • (on January 7, 1980, to the crowd at the Astrodome that welcomed the Oilers home after their second consecutive loss to the Steelers in the AFC championship game) "One year ago, we knocked on the door. This year, we beat on the door. Next year, we're going to kick the son of a ***** in."[SUP][11][/SUP][SUP][12][/SUP][SUP][13][/SUP]
  • (of Earl Campbell) "I don't know if he's in a class by himself, but I do know that when that class gets together, it sure don't take long to call the roll."[SUP][14][/SUP]
  • Late one night, Phillips and Sid Gillman were watching film and Phillips began to doze off. Gillman woke him up by saying, "Hey Bum, this is better than making love." Phillips responded, "Either I don't know how to watch film, Sid, or you don't know how to make love." (Phillips later indicated that his language may have actually been stronger than that.)[SUP][15][/SUP]
  • "Respect all. Fear none."
  • The only discipline that lasts is self-discipline."

My favorite Bum Phillips quote. About a year after the Saints fired him, a reporter was doing a story on him and asked him what he was doing these days. Bum said, "I don't do a damn thing. And I don't start till noon."
