Ron Higgins who use to write for the Memphis paper and now writes for the newspaper in New Orleans and lives in Baton Rouge wrote a column ranking the sec teams. On the section on State, wrote some nasty crap about Starkville. Worse than the stuff Matt Stevens said about Lafayette. This idiot should be fired.

Somebody can post a link to the story.

"Mississippi State (4-0, 1-0, No. 8, Saturday open date: The open date comes at a good time for the Bulldogs and the town of Starkville. While State is healing the few bumps and bruises it received in steamrolling LSU, Starkville is recovering from a raucous postgame celebration that saw several horse-and-buggies overturned, numerous reports of attempted cow tipping and a food fight in the Dairy Queen parking lot. Starkville police chief Bernard Fife said he came close to using his one bullet to restore peace."

That's really crappy.
I will say this, though: I am confident Higgins has actually been to Starkville in the last half-decade or so, which is more than most of the folks who constantly trash Starkville can say.

This is going to continue. Might as well prepare yourselves. People aren't accustomed to us winning, and it scares them.

I'm not getting all worked up about it. We criticize Lafayette, some people criticize Starkville. Whatever. I'm still enjoying Saturday's win.

That man has issues. As nice as it would be to act like last Saturday was just another good win, it was one of the biggest wins for our program in two decades, yet Ron spends practically the entire paragraph trashing Starkville.

I remember so little about this story that I'm probably just making something up right now, but I believe that Higgins had a son that wanted to walk on for one of our teams about 15 years ago(I think it was one of Jackie's teams), but something when wrong with it. Can't remember if he just wasn't good enough to even walk on or what, but Higgins wrote for the Commercial Appeal at the time, and all of a sudden his articles did nothing but badmouth MSU. I want to say that he was the one that wrote a long diatribe about how much we would regret firing Templeton as well.

The AG jokes are just so lame and played. List of AG programs around the country...

M.I.T., Cornell, Cal, UGA, Florida, LSU....

I mean, really? EVERY STATE HAS AN AG PROGRAM. We get it, MSU has an AG program, they have cows. What a tool

Yeah, it's pretty crappy, but it's obviously intended as satire. Here's his write-up on LSU for comparison:

Before this season started, you could buy a ticket to this upcoming game for as inexpensive as $10. But after LSU's loss to Mississippi State, the Tigers' marketing department has had to take a more aggressive approach for this weekend. The latest promotion is for $50, a fan can buy 10 tickets, park directly on the field behind the Tigers' bench and become LSU's offensive coordinator for one series.

It was a weak attempt at humor and certainly not worth getting worked up over.

I know at least one of his kids went to State, so I imagine he has been to Starkville more than most other media who like to say stupid crap like that, but come on, stop it with same old Starkville shtick.

I think his son walked on to play football at State and then transferred. People have alluded to that possibly being a reason.

And, here is his lame response to my email...

My original email:
At what point does this stop? It is just such a lame attempt at humor and is so obvious that you are trying to play to the masses. We get it. Starkville has the word 'stark' in it. We get it, MSU is the Ag school for the State of Mississippi, they have cows so I can make cow jokes. (You do realize that LSU and Auburn and Florida and M.I.T. and California and UGA and Cornell and aTm and VaTech and countless other colleges also have Ag programs, right?)
Again, it is just SOOOOO played. It really is the kind of joke that was done about 20 years ago yet you still allow your hatred of MSU to go back to it. You leave Memphis for Baton Rouge. MSU gets a huge win in Baton Rouge and you can only allow jokes about Starkville not being fun? This traces back to all of your not-so-witty barbs in Memphis about MSU and Starkville. Your ranting about Rick Ray. It is just so lame.
You are the kind of person that I would venture has not set foot in Starkville, possibly ever. Is it a small town in Mississippi? Yep. Are there tons of small college towns all over the country? Yep. Just stop letting your hatred bleed through so obviously. Grow up.

HIS RESPONSE:
I have set foot in Starkville probably more than 100 times in my life. Stayed there overnight plenty of times. Have made many good friends in the Mississippi State family. Cannot count all the positive articles I've written about State through the years, including last Sunday's game column and a column recently on Jack Cristil. My son even attended State for two years as a walkon under Jackie Sherrill.
So you know nothing about me and my relationship with Starkville and Mississippi State.
I do know you have no sense of humor.

My Response:
Again, what sense of humor is it to make such a lame joke? How many times have you laughed about LSU's Ag school or Auburn's or M.I.T.'s? Maybe their fans can bask in the laughter of your riotous humor with you. But, perhaps, if the joke is only being laughed at by you, you are the joke.
And, your explanation of your joke being 'ok' is on the same level as saying I can make a black joke because I have a black friend. Again, just lame. And this seems to be the constant with you.

I teach seventh and eighth graders. This sounds like something a bored eighth grader would come up with? Are you sure an adult wrote this?

The problem is that we're expected to take all the derogatory jokes but not dish them out. Nobody gets the HD6/Matt Stevens treatment for trashing MSU, Starkville, or Mississippians.

Good god, stop emailing the guy. You're embarrassing yourself. Why do our fans do this? Who give a flying 17 what Ron Higgins says in an article? He was trying to make a joke, and it wasn't funny. It's not worth getting your panties in a bunch over. We worry too much about stupid ****. Our fans are horrible sometimes.

Sometimes we look like the most insecure people on the planet. Little brother syndrome at its worst. We just had one of our biggest football wins in the last 20 years and people are emailing Ron Higgins about some lame joke he made about Starkville being a sleepy, Mayberry type down. Let's stop being so damn insecure about ourselves and not get worked up over stupid stuff like a Starkville=Mayberry joke.

I agree. You're never going to win the argument with a sportswriter so it's pointless to try. What he wrote was more embarrassing for him than for MSU or Starkville.

Sensitive much?

The dude was making a lame joke. It wasn't that bad.

Or maybe you should start a petition? Mark Twain said something about picking a fight with a man that buys ink by the barrel, but don't let that get in the way of a good rant.

There is a difference between telling a good joke and being an a**hole and a lot of it has to do with which side of the joke you are on. Another is not knowing when to cut if out already.

My problem with this is first of all this 'joke' is way past getting old. You ever saw someone getting kidded about something and for a while they are good sports and laugh along but then as it continues long enough that they finally get a belly full and start raising hell? That is where I am with this. The second thing is that we seem to be the favored school in the SEC for the butt of such humor. Case in point this guy in his article goes through every school in the SEC straight up until he gets to us and then he feels compelled to trot out the tired old gags about Starkville being a small town with an ag school.

I'm sorry but I am just way past sick of it and it has nothing to do with not having a sense of humor. I do agree though that emailing the prick is a waste of time.

I'm with you AHS. I liked both of your responses. It was a very lame joke, and one that gets repeated by the uneducated masses. Screw those who think it's silly or embarrassing. WTF, just don't respond if you don't agree. Skip over the dang post. You don't have to have a reply in every hot damn post. It's not hard.

My sentiments exactly. and, I was not seeking approval with my email posting

Was using is reply to answer the question about his ties to MSU. To me, it very obviously showed where a lot of his issues with MSU come from.

So, a few on here (appears to be a minority) want to bust the balls of a lazy sportswriter. Concerns you how?

Meanwhile on foom y'all are suggesting the Associated Press have sex with an axe (for writing the truth) and want to sue your university for tampering with your beloved traditions. Forward Rebels!

Here at Mississippi State, we're trying to re-write history on the football field. Y'all are trying to re-write history quite differently.

Well, i doubt you have seen me whining about anything on either board.

But as far as the thread over there that you mention now, i also don't see anyone whining in that one, but i am not going to argue semantics. I didn't give a **** about that article either. MS rednecks are gonna MS redneck. All you can do is ridicule them for it.

You still want Matt Wyatt fired?
