Expect to upset Elkin. Im calling this one. They have some very good solid young players. If you run straight at them you may fair well. The Elks tackle and contain the edges fairly well.

Rosman passed more than they ran the ball against Murphy.

Honestly believe it is which Elkin team will show up, do you get the team that beat WC and NS or the one that lost to Starmount and got thumped by Alleghany, this one is a toss up, but with the long ride for Rosman I will take the Elks in a close one

Traveling doesn’t bother Rosman! Their closest conference game is over an hour away.

I know they probably want to stay in the SMC but it i think it would cut some traveling down for Rosman if they were in the WHC conference.

That ain't going to happen because the fans don't want it to happen, and I'm one of those that never wants to see Rosman leave the SMC......

As for the game, Rosman has played at Elkin 3 other times, and was the underdog each time as they probably will be this time.....

This will be the first time that Rosman has brought a passing attack offense to Yadkin County, and the Tigers will for the most part be healthy for the first time this season with most everyone back from what I've been told.....

Rosman has a lot of Seniors on this team, so it will be interesting to see if they want to keep playing or if they are ready for basketball season to start next monday?

I look for a high scoring game with clear skies friday night after a week of rain, and hope both teams leave the game injury free!

On a side note if you Rosman fans get a chance to visit the Yadkin Valley General Store, Phil is a good guy, and will do you right....Still have a business card that I've kept from my last trip to Elkin a few moons ago when the Tigers made their last trip to Elkin, and I bought some coffee and other items from the General Store before the game with the Bucking Elks....

Roar Tigers Roar!

Rosman will probably be in the WHC next realignment. Especially if heritage drops. Draughn will be 1a, and will join the conference.
The new all 1a WHC will look probably look like this in 2021
Heritage
Mitchell
Polk
Avery
Draughn
Rosman
Heritage will probably have to lose another 40 or so students between now and next year to fall to 1A. Its possible but probably won't happen. If the state were to go back to 25-25-25-25 they will be 1A though.

I know there is a lot of history with Rosman and the SMC, but if I am the superintendent of Transylvania schools I am looking at this from an academic and financial standpoint and not an athletic standpoint while doing what is best for the students and if it can save some hours on the road and make the trips easier while saving some gas money then I want my school in a conference that reduces travel. It's very likely they could stay in an all 1A conference with Draughn probably dropping as mentioned above.

I am not sure it saves a lot of miles:
Avery- 107 miles
Draughn - 104 miles
Mitchell- 94 miles
Heritage- 74 miles
Polk (is a little shorter) 53 miles

There is one less team in the conference and that would save fuel
WHC Average distance = 86.4 miles

Smoky Mountain Teams
Murphy 98 miles
Andrews 97 miles
Robbbinsville 95 Miles
Hayesville 81 miles
Swain 67 miles
Cherokee 65 miles

Average SMC distance = 83.8
It is really kind of a wash.

If it were up to me I would stay in the SMC. That is just my opinion! That is no offense to the WHC but we are already in the SMC.

Smc would have another non conference game to try and fill. Wish HD would field a team
HD will never have a team imo. Andrews may drop football eventually if their numbers keep falling, as it will get more and more difficult to field a team. Consolidation may happen before it gets to that point though.

A lot less time on the trips though and better roads.

With the way the legislature is starving public schools I think you'll see a bit more consolidation sadly in small counties.

But back on topic, Elkin lost one of their better players late in the season, and don't seem to be on the same page they were. I think Rosman wins 27-7.

I agree I don't see heritage dropping to 1A , I may be wrong but if anything I see them getting bigger because of the new four lane Yancey county is becoming like a suburb of Asheville. I know of people who live in Burnsville area and work in Asheville area because at the moment land prices and taxes are cheaper then in Madison and Buncombe county.

2 weeks ago alleghany spanked elkin 40 to 0 on the worst field ive ever seen for highschool ball. Muddy as can be...if rosman tries to throw the ball in that crap they could be in trouble. Alleghany ran it at em...then ran it at em...then ran it at em some more...thats the formula that will beat elkin....although elkin looked flat out sorry in general still cant believe the adjusted rankings had them higher than us

Most in the SMC would celebrate Rosman moving to the WHC. It would be a win win for everyone. The fact that they are still in the SMC at the middle school level is insane. I would love to see them moved. Nothing personal against the Tigers. It is just more sensible for everyone
I have to disagree also. It’s hard enough for us to compete as it is especially with enrollment down to 209. Finding teams to play with similar numbers is limited to Home school teams which is not doing us any good other than a win. We all hate the travel but it’s every other year in football. To me it wouldn’t be the same not having Rosman. They are always well coached and very hard nosed athletes who compete at a high level in each sport. The kind of team we need to be competing against. With Murphy & Swain having the largest enrollment and it will not change for either its only Andrews, Cherokee, Robbinsville, Rosman & Hayesville left with smaller numbers. Can’t afford to lose one of them in my opinion

This is the 25th year of Rosman rejoining the conference, and I think both the SMC members and Rosman have adjusted to the travel through the years, but I can't say the same for some of the fans....The older you get the less inclined that you are to travel that far on friday nights or through the week for that matter....However as pointed out above, the mileage between the SMC and potentially joining the WHC is virtually the same....Not to mention, Rosman would likely still play several SMC schools in non-conference games if that were to actually happen, so I don't see it as necessary that the Tigers move to the WHC, and the NCHSAA should have NO say in whether Rosman stays in the SMC, and maintains their tradition as a member of one of the most competitive and stable 1A conferences in the state, or leaves for another conference where the conference would consist of new/old members ...

There ain't going to be any consolidation between Rosman and Brevard because the county residents just voted for a new 68 million dollar school bond to upgrade both schools, so consolidation is off the table for years to come in Transylvania County and in fact will likely never happen as there are very few 100 acre tracts of land that is either available or affordable left in this County that would be necessary in order to build a new school ....

I will personally call the Superintendent, and help organize a protest in front of his house if he were to force Rosman to move to another conference....Brevard has their yearly conference battle with their rival Pisgah, and Rosman has played Cherokee in conference play longer than they have any other team, and that tradition would be lost if Rosman was forced into another conference....It's a matter of doing what's right and fair for both Rosman and Brevard, so there's more that's involved rather than the mileage a team would have to travel for sporting events, but you would have to live in Transylvania County to understand that...

I want Rosman to remain a member of the SMC for the foreseeable future, and I know a lot of Rosman fans that want the same thing....

Now as far as this week's game goes, I have never predicted the outcome of a Rosman playoff game, and I ain't about to start now....

I will say that this week's game is a tossup based on how the two teams finished the regular season....

The last 3 times that Rosman visited Elkin, Rosman had a very potent rushing attack, and were pretty sound on defense, so that is what makes this friday's matchup so much more difficult to gage than the previous 3 meetings between the Tigers and the Bucking Elks....

Roar Tigers Roar!

I read an article from November 2017 that Cherokee county was looking at combining thier three high schools not only because of down enrollment but age and shape of the school buildings but of more people were against it because thier loyalty to whatever school they went too. We've had a lot of decisions like that in Mitchell county in starting in the early '70s went from 3 highschools too 2 too 1.. 4 middle schools to 3 too 2 now just got a grant to build a new middle school for the whole county just below the high school. But that article is a year old and haven't seen any updates. Does anyone know if that's still a discussion or has the idea been killed?

To be revisited soon though.
Not going to be anytime soon if they follow through with their three phase plan, but it's inevitable. The plan as it stands is, Phase 1: build a new school for Oaks Academy and Tri County Early College. Phase 2: build a elementary/middle school for Murphy, Peachtree and Martins Creek (in Peachtree). Phase 3: a new Murphy High building, as it's the oldest and most in need of replacement. Honestly it's absurd that it took this long to address it, Murphy High was falling apart and a dump 20 years ago.

It just looks a lot like Mitchell county in the early 1970's. Tipton hill high school was about the size of Hiawassee Dam they merged with Bowman in 73 or 74. Bowman and Harris was about Murphy size. Then there was a county vote on wither to merge Bowman & Harris and build a new school in the middle. Then after the vote passed to merge starting in 75 the sport teams started playing together and the first class of Mitchell high was 78-79. And Bowman & Harris became middle schools. We were then a 3A school it was called 3A little Mac then.
