Rosman passed more than they ran the ball against Murphy.Expect to upset Elkin. Im calling this one. They have some very good solid young players. If you run straight at them you may fair well. The Elks tackle and contain the edges fairly well.
Traveling doesn’t bother Rosman! Their closest conference game is over an hour away.Honestly believe it is which Elkin team will show up, do you get the team that beat WC and NS or the one that lost to Starmount and got thumped by Alleghany, this one is a toss up, but with the long ride for Rosman I will take the Elks in a close one

I know they probably want to stay in the SMC but it i think it would cut some traveling down for Rosman if they were in the WHC conference.
Heritage will probably have to lose another 40 or so students between now and next year to fall to 1A. Its possible but probably won't happen. If the state were to go back to 25-25-25-25 they will be 1A though.Rosman will probably be in the WHC next realignment. Especially if heritage drops. Draughn will be 1a, and will join the conference.
The new all 1a WHC will look probably look like this in 2021
Heritage
Mitchell
Polk
Avery
Draughn
Rosman
I am not sure it saves a lot of miles:Rosman will probably be in the WHC next realignment. Especially if heritage drops. Draughn will be 1a, and will join the conference.

HD will never have a team imo. Andrews may drop football eventually if their numbers keep falling, as it will get more and more difficult to field a team. Consolidation may happen before it gets to that point though.Smc would have another non conference game to try and fill. Wish HD would field a team
A lot less time on the trips though and better roads.I am not sure it saves a lot of miles:
Avery- 107 miles
Draughn - 104 miles
Mitchell- 94 miles
Heritage- 74 miles
Polk (is a little shorter) 53 miles
There is one less team in the conference and that would save fuel
WHC Average distance = 86.4 miles
Smoky Mountain Teams
Murphy 98 miles
Andrews 97 miles
Robbbinsville 95 Miles
Hayesville 81 miles
Swain 67 miles
Cherokee 65 miles
Average SMC distance = 83.8
It is really kind of a wash.
If it were up to me I would stay in the SMC. That is just my opinion! That is no offense to the WHC but we are already in the SMC.

No doubt some of those trips are easier.A lot less time on the trips though and better roads.
How bad will their field be after a weeks worth of rain? I know the last floods they got flooded a lot of their athletic fields.
With as much rain as we are expecting this week, I'd say it will be pretty rough.
I agree I don't see heritage dropping to 1A , I may be wrong but if anything I see them getting bigger because of the new four lane Yancey county is becoming like a suburb of Asheville. I know of people who live in Burnsville area and work in Asheville area because at the moment land prices and taxes are cheaper then in Madison and Buncombe county.Heritage will probably have to lose another 40 or so students between now and next year to fall to 1A. The entire football field was under 4 feet of water a week or so before the game......spanked elkin 40 to 0 on the worst field ive ever seen for highschool ball. Muddy as can be..
Strongly disagree. And I dont believe it would be a win win at all. Murphy has a lot of trouble finding games as is, would be even tougher finding yet another non conference game. Most in the SMC would celebrate Rosman moving to the WHC. It would be a win win for everyone.
I have to disagree also. It’s hard enough for us to compete as it is especially with enrollment down to 209. Finding teams to play with similar numbers is limited to Home school teams which is not doing us any good other than a win. We all hate the travel but it’s every other year in football. To me it wouldn’t be the same not having Rosman. They are always well coached and very hard nosed athletes who compete at a high level in each sport. The kind of team we need to be competing against. With Murphy & Swain having the largest enrollment and it will not change for either its only Andrews, Cherokee, Robbinsville, Rosman & Hayesville left with smaller numbers. Can’t afford to lose one of them in my opinionMost in the SMC would celebrate Rosman moving to the WHC. It would be a win win for everyone. The fact that they are still in the SMC at the middle school level is insane. I would love to see them moved. Nothing personal against the Tigers. It is just more sensible for everyone
I read an article from November 2017 that Cherokee county was looking at combining thier three high schools not only because of down enrollment but age and shape of the school buildings but of more people were against it because thier loyalty to whatever school they went too. We've had a lot of decisions like that in Mitchell county in starting in the early '70s went from 3 highschools too 2 too 1.. 4 middle schools to 3 too 2 now just got a grant to build a new middle school for the whole county just below the high school. But that article is a year old and haven't seen any updates. Does anyone know if that's still a discussion or has the idea been killed?I have to disagree also. Not going to be anytime soon if they follow through with their three phase plan, but it's inevitable. The plan as it stands is, Phase 1: build a new school for Oaks Academy and Tri County Early College. Phase 2: build a elementary/middle school for Murphy, Peachtree and Martins Creek (in Peachtree). Phase 3: a new Murphy High building, as it's the oldest and most in need of replacement. Honestly it's absurd that it took this long to address it, Murphy High was falling apart and a dump 20 years ago.To be revisited soon though.
It just looks a lot like Mitchell county in the early 1970's. Tipton hill high school was about the size of Hiawassee Dam they merged with Bowman in 73 or 74. Bowman and Harris was about Murphy size. Then there was a county vote on wither to merge Bowman & Harris and build a new school in the middle. Then after the vote passed to merge starting in 75 the sport teams started playing together and the first class of Mitchell high was 78-79. And Bowman & Harris became middle schools. We were then a 3A school it was called 3A little Mac then. Not going to be anytime soon if they follow through with their three phase plan, but it's inevitable. The plan as it stands is to a build a K thru 8 school for Martins Creek, Peachtree and Murphy (in Peachtree) after they build the new school for Oaks and TCEC. Phase 3 is a new Murphy High building as it's the oldest and most in need of replacement.
