Others will obviously have better input but one of my roommates and good friends was ROTC. Ended up flying cargo planes full of rubber dogshit out of Hong Kong.. (C-130’s in Alaska and Afghanistan). Did his time and got out. I think he would say it was overall a good experience.
I looked into the ROTC program at state. for my oldest son, it is a great program, highly recommend.
AF ROTC at State made the rest of my life great. Pilot training was hard, but it made me work hard for what I wanted. Got to fly jet transports all around the world and that lead to an airline job for the rest of my career. My AF training led to management jobs at my airline.
Let's say it beat running a funeral home in Laurel, MS. Don't get me wrong...I love my hometown.

I was, but that was 30+ years ago. It was worth it back then, but I can't speak to now.
Another option is the MS Air National Guard. The student will get a good bit of school money, but after basic/tech school/OJT, the student will likely be a year or more behind.
It was a long time ago, back when ROTC was required of male students for the first 2 years at State, but a good friend of mine majoring in EE went advanced Air Force ROTC. He made a career of the Air Force, taught at the Air Force Academy, and retired as a colonel. So he had a good career.
