How can the NCHSAA's RPI ranking be so different from the maxpreps rankings? And which is more "accurate"? I know the state RPI is really all that matter but it is confusing how a team can be #4 on maxpreps and #13 on RPI or #5 RPI and #26 on maxpreps. I know maxpreps uses a strength of schedule number to calculate the rankings but i guess without knowing what percentage of what number is calculated its difficult to figure out. Below left is Maxpreps new top 8 as of 9/29 vs their RPI ranking and on the right is the top 8 in the RPI ranking vs where they are on maxpreps full ranking, the last available date of 9/28.

Maxpreps, Massey, SimmonsRatings, rpis are numbers-based as they are calculated by formulas.

NCPreps doesn’t go by a formula. Take in considerations injuries, etc

I apologize that was the NCPreps rankings not maxpreps but the questions remains between the 3 how can some be very close like East Lincoln and some be 20 spots difference. St. Pauls/ West Carteret? and has historically any 1 been more correct? Or is this just mid season weirdness that will all get sorted out by the end of the season which each ones top 25 being pretty much the same. Three different roads to the same destination.

Just mid-season weirdness. RPI will be pretty good by end of season. They'll probably be some headscratchers but for the most part good teams who beat good teams will get good seeds.
