Not sure if it's a golf club or country club but I was talking to my good friend Tony green last night, we're playing in the International Four Ball, and he brought up the pro's name at Oak Ridge of Rich Strager, I think that's what he said, and didn't know if you knew him. Played last sunday, gorgeous day no wind, and we played the back tees and I had 7 birdies through 16 holes. Unfortunately, I finished bogey, bogey for 68. Still took $$$ off my buds.

Yes, been a member for over 20 years. We are a country club which has been an issue. During my presidency of the club, I fought back an effort to get rid of the amenities which typically are consistent with a CC-namely the pool facility (which was over 50 years old) and our 6 clay tennis courts and our squash court. I was successful in spearheading an initiative to invest $1 million in a new pool/outdoor entertainment facility which will allow us to attract younger members. The membership overwhelmingly approved that initiative and construction is ongoing. So I'm rather proud of that. My legacy to the club. So, we are NOT a golf club. :)

I know Rich Spraker very well. He was our head pro and general manager for 2 different stints. His son and my son were high school teammates. Rich is a great guy despite being a former Hokie golfer. He is now at Springbrook CC in Athens, TN. I still talk to Rich regularly.

Ask him if he remembers Tony? Tony said he was back down in Athens which is where tony lived when I first met him back in the early 80's. Tony was talking about playing tenn national and whoever he was playing with said that if Tony shot over 73, Tony owed him a $100. If he shot under 71, the course record at the time, he would pay Tony $100. Tony shot 68, first time seeing the course, the guy took the pro the card and said new course record. The pro said that Scott Stallings started in group behind Tony and shot 66. Tony said that was the shortest a course record ever stood.

Cool story. That is a tough Greg Norman design-especially from the tips. That reminds me of a course record I once set in 1987 at the Standard Club in Atlanta which happens to be a predominantly Jewish club. My friend who was the member invited me about a month after it opened. He said that nobody had broken par and the course record was 72. He had played a lot of golf with me in memphis while we were in school and told all his buds that he thought i could do better than even. I remember making eagle on the second and holding on for a 1 under 71. I really felt the pressure since I had a bit of a gallery on the back 9. It lasted just a couple more weeks until some tour pro ripped it apart. But I still have the competitive course record at the course I grew up on. 65 and it has stood since 1981.

When we reopened in 04 after a redesign by Bill Love, I set the new course record of 64 on a Friday. Three good college players and I had a little match the next day. We each switched partneres every 6 holes. Aaron Eckstein, Va tech golfer, shot 63, par is 71. My course record lasted less than 24 hours. Eckstein has since shot 60, so it's out of reach for me. It was a really good foursome, Eckstein, Brewbaker and Nadeau. Brewbaker led the 2nd stage one year at Q school and Nadeau as on the Big10 all freshman team.
