If a team is penalized 15 yards for unsportsmanlike after a score as we were yesterday and we kicked off from 15 yards farther back after the score, where would the ball be placed if we kicked it out of bounds? 35 yd line or midfield? Thanks.

35. The 15 yards is the penalty and anything that happens after the ball is kicked is a new play.

I think it's Midfield. I'm 90 percent sure of that. I see what u are thinking and the ball would be placed at midfield by rule to keep the penalized team from just kicking it OOB to minimize the effect of the unsportsmanlike penalty.

It is. I don't know the wording of the rule, but otherwise teams would just kick it out.

Midfield. The penalty for kicking a kickoff out of bounds is the receiving team gets the ball 30 yards from the spot of the kickoff.

You are right. Teams get 3 options... The ball 30 yards from the spot of the kick, the ball at the spot it went OOB, or to have the kicking team rekick it.

boy did I read that one wrong. He said "out of bounds" and I'm thinking "touchback"... and still wrong either way. Still foggy from last night. Here's what the NCAA says about it.

Live-ball foul. Five yards from the previous spot; or five yards
from the spot where the subsequent dead ball belongs to Team
B; or the receiving team may put the ball in play 30 yards
beyond Team A’s restraining line at the hash mark [S19].
