If that blocked punt had bounced past the 1st down marker and UAB fell on it, would they have been awarded a first down?

It's my understanding that, unless possession changed & we fumbled again, no. However, I'm often wrong.

Yes. And regardless of which team recovered the fumble (unless we get possession and then fumble), it's our ball...but you knew that.

...so, I was wrong and the answer to your question is "no." It's the same as a punt not blocked--they're simply downing the ball. They can, however, pick up the blocked ball behind the line of scrimmage and advance it for a 1st down.
