Rumor mill about tonight's game

I don't know if this has been discussed, but I just wanted to throw this little nugget out there. I've heard that Ravern is possibly suspended from tonight's game. Apparently he got upset about lack of playing time at the end of Auburn game (after the eye poke incident), left after the game and went home, and missed practice.

Take this for what it is... a rumor. If this is Germanic, lock it up and move on.

I know he has some really great games every now and then, but I would just rather he not see the court tonight. Stans lets him struggle for WAY too long. When he's off, he never gets back in it.

I like Stans a lot, but he pretty much has lost this team. We've had nothing but a bunch of drama queens on the team for the last 3 years. If he can't get things back under control, I'll start agreeing with people like you and Coach34 who are about ready for a change.

Yea his defense sucks ***, but he is our best offensive player (even though that isn't saying too much). Osby is too damn slow to play the 3, and Turner plays like he has an attention defict disorder.

black uniforms, which makes no sense considering we're doing a maroon/white checkered theme in the stands.

If this is true, Ravern is an idiot. Getting pissed is one thing, missing practice and getting suspended because you thought you should have played after having to come out is another. I'm sure there is more to the story though.

...Stansbury loses control of his team, and then the board says "Fine. We don't need you anyway." See Jackson, Robert (who went on to have a pretty nice NCAA tourney run at Marquette), Hans, Ben, and Delks, Reggie and Dick. It's always the fault of the player. Never the coach who continues to have no control over the team.

correction: he is our best offensive player on about every other other other other night. it's a gamble everytime he starts a game whether he'll be on or off.

Hopefully it's not true b/c to beat Kentucky we'd most likely need Ravern to go off. He's the one guy that get 3's off with people in his face and he's much more likely to get red hot than any of our other guys.

If true this just shows you how whiny most of our team has become.

I know his defense struggles, but I fail to see how not having him for this game is a good thing.

Punish him without suspending him. Have him do extra work, like, hmmm i don't know, SHOOT FREE THROWS! Or defensive drills? No, let's just let him sit on his *** as punishment, and not actually use it to teach him anything.

Our basketball team immediately got much better the day Robert Jackson got kicked off of it. He needed to go, no matter what he would up doing at Marquette a couple of years later. Stans has lost control of the team in the past few years, but back then he did have control of it.

the team voting not to let Robert Jackson back on the squad after he quit. And the part about the team really playing well the rest of the season.

I'd like to add a Robert Jackson hex theory to the lexicon. Seems like ever since he and Stans butted heads, there's been some sort of ego-freak out by a player (often good ones. How come a scrub never pulls crap like this) AT LEAST once a season. This one is extra special because it's before a really big game. What the hell kind of voodoo did he throw on the locker room before he split for Milwaukee?

If true, why did it take 5 years before the hex kicked in? We didn't have problems like this from the time he got kicked off the team until about 3 years ago.

Ravern is our best shooter if he is hot, otherwise he is a liability. He is pissed b/c he has been pulled at the end of the last two games for Osby's defense.

I will say Raven has brought his game in since strugling outside. I know that his defense sucks but we still need him to have a big game.

After the Delks, I remember being excited to sign a shooter who could actually shoot FTs. From his mstateathletics profile:

Also converted on 84 percent of his charity tosses during his junior campaign.

Surely, their NBA-level skills came with heightened perceptions of...other things. If so, I think that fills in the inconsistencies with the timeline.

...looking back, it was the first incident of systematic issues with player control. It's run the course of his whole coaching career.

I believe Auburn ran 3 guards most of the game and Osby got a lot of second half minutes with Kodi and Varnado. That means he was likely playing a 3 for most of the game where played very well.

I like our big lineup with Varnado, Kodi, and Osby in at the same time.

on offense with the ball in his hands, he is too slow to the play the three.....he tries to beat people off the dribble, and either walks or turns it over. To be fair though RJ isn't going to beat many people off the dribble either, and his ball handling skills are probably the worst on the team, with the exception of Riek.

There is just nothing to back that up. Ravern has had three poor offensive games in our ten conference games. Yet you claim he's bad 4 out 5? Hardly.

If you mean hot from three point range, the stats don't back you up. He scored 19 of our62 points on 47 % shooting atArkansas despite a poor outside shooting game (1 of 8). He alsoscored 15 on 55% shootingagainst LSU despite only making one three in four attempts.Against Florida, he was 2 of 4 from three (not bad but hardly on fire) but still scored 20on 73% shooting.

So, in our last 6 games, he had a hot shooting night in one (Ole Miss), two poor games (Auburn and Vandy), one where he was decent from deep buthad a good game, one where he was poor from deep but had a good game, and one where he was dreadful from deep but still had a good game.

He had a bad game against Auburn, but the idea that Ravern has to be hot from the 3-point line to be effective is old news. It's simply not true anymore.

Edited for typo

Who needs facts?

The fact is that Ray has developed as an offensive player other than jacking up threes. No, he's not going to beat you off the dribble, but he has shown an ability to get to the hole.

no joke. About 2 or 3 AM. He checked out in front of me. He bought a stuffed Valentine's Day bear. I thought hey, look, Ravern must have a girlfriend. Then he bought another bear. Then another. Guess I should have figured.

But in regards to this rumor, this doesn't really check out. He seemed fine, plus there's this, from Veazey's blog:
"Basketball injury updates: Ravern Johnson, who took a
shot to his nose and eye, should be OK and ready to play in Tuesday’s
game against Kentucky."

RJ is probably not strong enough to be an elite defensive player, but someone long and athletic shouldn't be a liability.UK is not the game I would want him sittingandthis late in the season, there wouldn't really be a point. But if RJ had been required toplay close to his ability on D at the beginning of the season in order to play, we could be in much better shape right now.If he reacted negatively to it, we'd be completely screwed, but if you can't ask your players to play hard D, I'm not sure how much more screwed you can get.

Ravern has become a very good offensive player. He has also scored more points than anybody else on the team. It sucks that, if the rumor is true, we will be playing the #2 team in the nation without our best point producer.
