Coach Cav said that they ran the same play 31 times against Rutgers.... A power run play.

Is this a good thing or an asinine thing? Lack of creativity, or exploiting a weakness?

I think it is a bad thing, but at least they were running it and not having a chance for an interception. I believe we have the athletes and the ability to mix it up and be more successful.

It was smart (although 31 seems a bit of an exaggeration...but maybe not). The power run game enabled us to get out of there with a win. If we run our normal offense that win might have been in jeopardy.

As a coach, I will run something over and over until you make an adjustment to stop it. Nobody has ever accused me of being smart though, lol.

I have seen the same complaint about our coaches "mixing it up" and going away from things that we were killing it with. I believe you should only mix it up if you have to.

I believe in scripting the first dozen plays or so (to a certain extent) and then going continuously with what was working after that....until the opponent proves they have made the adjustment to stop it consistently.

If I am getting 5-6 or more on every single same (or similar) play I run, figure out a way to stop it. Nothing more demoralizing for a defense. That's why I am not a big fan of bend but don't break defenses.....jmo

running what ever play works that day is a good thing, and ussually opens up the other plays

I have said this from the get go with this staff, there is very little innovation or originality in the run game. Then when you add it the lack of a running QB you really get behind the eight ball.

It is their program and they can run it how they want, but if I am a college football coach I incorporate some type of QB run game into my offense.

Barry Switzer said after he beat NU back in the 70's we kept running the same play because they couldn't stop it and until they stopped it he'd keep running it

Back in the day my team ran 5 QB sneaks in a row because our opponent was setting up to stop our outside option game. We averaged over 5 yards per carry on the sneaks and as soon as we sucked them in we ran a straight pitch which went roughly 65 for a TD. Run it til they stop it or put themselves in such a bad spot with their response that you can gouge them with something else.

It was. We started somewhere inside the 10. Ran the first sneak to give us some room as I recall and just kept running it until we had just about their whole D in the box.

Some of their plays have gotten obvious. My worry is they run one thing a ton because the kids can't execute the other stuff. That's a problem when you're in your 3rd year.
