I was more amused at the chicks bowlegged stride than anything. Well, that and the girl who finished second puking on herself. Wes Korir was strong until Mutai absolutely blew up the field.

* Starting the slow plan to ramp up my mileage. Goal is to somehow make it through next April for the marathon without completely destroying my legs to do some triathlons next summer/fall.

Sometimes I still can't quite wrap my head around what those elites are able to do. So fast, but seemingly without effort. Mutai's time today was just ridiculous in those conditions. More impressive IMO than his 2:03:02 in Boston.

He really cut back in that last mile too after he had dispatched anyone in the area. But the tv coverage is awesome when they get a side view and you can actually see how impressive their stride is and how fast they are actually moving.

One thing I was surprised with is that the female winner took home $700k for the win and world major bonus. I know thats not a lot for most pro athletes but I was surprised that the women's winner of a fringe pro sport took home that much.

Congrats Legal! That's a great time!

I ran the Indianapolis Monumental Half Marathon yesterday. It's a great race, I hope to do it again. I ran with my cousin. She's always wanted to do it and has lost some weight. She still has about 50 to lose but she trained really hard. We finished really slowly but I paced her along so we didn't get picked up by the SAG Wagons that were looming behind us a big chunk of the time! At times, my walk pace was faster than her run pace. But she is a teacher, husband's a nurse, and they have 3 kids so I know training was a big sacrifice for her. I was proud.

I actually haven't run in 5 weeks since hurting my foot. It was hurting up until race day. It felt okay during the race. Last night, I was certain I re-aggravated it because it hurt so badly. Today, it doesn't hurt at all. It hasn't felt this good since September. Weird.

My cousin's 15 year old daughter also ran. She plays soccer but didn't really train, outside of a few short runs and a 7 miler. She finished in 2:18 with almost dead even splits. She's hooked now. She wants to train more and run cross country now.

* Did 165 miles this month. Has to be a record for me.

Paducah Ironmom might be worth trying to go under 1:30 for a half. Saturday before Mother's Day. Usually a cool morning, and aside from some gentle hills around 4-7, it's flat and fast. No elites, so anything under 1:30 will put you top 10 in a field of 4-500 plus.

^^Never saw Christ, but our cabbie looked just like John Lennon. Don't think it was him though, as he made it a point to spontaneously tell us he didn't care for Mexicans.

-Can't imagine any 1/2 being faster and flatter than the one we just did in Louisville. For me running rollers almost all the time it was awesome.

-Think mentally I'm pretty much set on the full in May and 1/2 IM in September. We'll see on the 1/2 IM though.

-Ran my normal 5.25 on Friday, which was really kind of silly because it's kind of hilly, and sure enough knee was hurting all day yesterday. Feels ok today just a little tender so I went for an easy 25 mile bike. Hopefully that loosens it up. Ready to get back to running 5 days per week.

-Off topic but I've been reading a lot and I love endurance/running books. Any recommendations? Looking more for novels rather than training guides.

Not a book, but the documentary - "My Run" where this guy runs 75 marathon distances in 75 days after losing his wife to breast cancer is interesting. Your heart breaks for the struggles he goes through but you respect his determination. I know I watched it for free either on HBOgo, NetFlix, or Amazon Prime.

I love to read, but there just really aren't very many good running books. I think the biggest problem is that most of them are auto-biographies, which turn out to be little more than just 300 pages of bragging and race reports. In other words = BORING.

born to run --> best of the bunch, and most everyone has read it

ultramarathon man --> really the only karnazes book worth reading

my life on the run --> bart yasso / former editor of runners world

duel in the sun --> fantastic read about '82 boston marathon showdown between alberto salazar and dick beardsley

running with the buffaloes --> anyone read this? looks intriguing.

bowerman and the men of oregon --> dont waste your time. awful and slow/boring

kings of the road --> anyone read this?

-looks like rest and 3 mile easy runs helped the knee. Got a last fast 3 in tonight and felt great.

-5 in the morning. Maybe 7 if i feel really good.

-breaking in New shoes is a mixed bag. Feels great at first, then weird and then finally normal. Love the new vomeros though. Really light.

-our ragnar key west team is ridic. At 7:45-8 10k pace I'm one of the slow ones. We're looking at 26 hours or so for the 200.

Pink shorts are awesome.

Ran my first 10 miler yesterday. Decent conditions, fairly humid...

--->

Absolutely ran my *** off to clock a 1:09:31 (6:57)

Slowest mile was 7:02 and fastest was my 3rd at 6:47 (
in the last mile.

As sore today as I've been in years but its the best race I've run in my life.

Ready to get this behind me and getting back to comfortable running.

Foam roll it, Anth.

You speed demons kill me. I'm just happy that right now I'm running consistently under 10 min miles.

Put in a little over 3 miles on Saturday......in Gatlinburg. Our cabin was about a mile from the main road, straight up. One of those hills that cars struggle to drive up, and if there happened to be any snow/ice --> forget it.

So, that was a fun 30ish minutes of torture. Tried to run the entire 1 mile, but had to do some walking. Legs are absolutely beat now.

* Lass and I are signed up for the 106th annual Turkey Day Race. Great way to start the holiday festivities, and "earn" an entire day of stuffing your fat face.

* Getting back to normal now, post injury. 35 miles last week. Shooting for 40 this week. Tackled a 14-miler on Saturday. Achilles holding up nicely.

* Goal is to be fully operational and back to normal by January.

Anybody ever ran in the Altra Zero Drop shoes? Considering trying a pair. I've developed a supination on my left foot and I'm wondering if those might help get back to a more even foot strike.

* I've owned 2 pairs of these....

....I liked them, but you definitely need to break them in slowly. The first few times I ran in them, I could barely finish my run. It's crazy how the slight difference between traditional and minimalist shoes can work completely different muscle groups.

* Funny you should mention -- as I keep researching the natural/barefoot running movement, especially in light of my recent injury. I've always thought it made sense.....but the success really depends on that persons body. I've seen some that have made the move with disastrous results, and others that have prospered. So I'm not sure what will/wont work for me, but I'm at least going to give it a shot.

Yeah, their own website tells you to gradually break them in until your muscles adjust. I've got to try something. Ever since I fractured that metatarsal, the supination has been a major problem. Causes hip pain, outside toes will cramp 30-45 minutes into a run, and just generally makes running a pain in the ***.

I've run in Nike Free before (in fact, set my marathon PR in a pair), so I think I'll be OK. Altra shoes offer considerable more cushioning that most minimalist shoes, which is what I need.

Saw that online and wanted to sign up for it since god knows I'll be down in BF for Thanksgiving but plans changed. 106 years is impressive, curious what the turnout's like.

86 degrees slight rolling hills 150% humidity. I really hate to *****, honestly I do but damn. The 2.9 mile lap is killing all 4 of us. I eeked out 5.5 today and felt like I ran an ultra.

As for mminimaist ****. Unless you have a tin of patience forget it.

Have you tried the Altras? They hype these as having much more cushioning than your typical minimalist.

Some dude ran 365 marathons in as many days, so that isn't a world record. Or are they talking about him covering the 50 states 15 times?

Regardless, guy's a freak.

I'm assuming the record only counts official marathons. Physically, I'm sure plenty of people have had more successful years. But logistically, whew. That's quite a task. When he did LBL, he said the following day he was running a marathon in Virginia.

I think he's a baller attorney. So that would explain how he can pull it off financially.

Another great article....

Watched the documentary Desert Runners last night and it now carries the Voinovich. Seal of Approval.

It follows runners competing in the 4 Deserts Series, which is truly insane.

I'm partial to docs anyway but this one is pretty neat. Check it out if you get a chance.

Went for a 7 mile run yesterday, and did a 2-mile loop around the park....barefoot. Yikes. First time giving it a shot, and I did so basically as a training in running form/technique.

Its absolutely crazy how it works such different muscles. My feet/calves are absolutely on fire today.

BTW, someone as injury prone as PTI needs to rethink this barefoot thing. Take it slow. Trust me. I think most suggest 10% of your short runs starting out on grass.

20 ultramarathons, 15 marathons, and ~ 1600-2000 miles/year for the last 7 years....

1 back injury (from biking)
1 achilles injury (from overtraining)
1 glass incident (from walking out to my car)

Running-wise, I've been extremely injury-free -- as only once has running caused an injury in my last 12,000 miles or so. Not too shabby.

I love running in the cold. Love it. 25 tonight and it felt great BUT my new tights(they're awesome by the way) for some reason almost allowed me to get frost bite on my package. Didn't realize it until about 4 miles in but I was honestly worried.

You guys wear athletic shorts over or under? I was just going comando but I guess I need to add some layers there.

Dude.

I guess I don't have to worry about it much any more (with this weather down south), but that's a huge issue with super cold running. When it's in the 20s and below, especially windy, I'd get home and my package was....

- bright red
- felt like a popsicle
- shriveled up like i was you

I've seen on runningwarehouse.com that they sell thermal/windblocking underwear. That HAS to be worth the investment.

Running in cold weather is AWESOME. There's a zone of about 25-45 (no wind + sun) that is just ideal. It's getting started that blows. Makes that post-workout coffee shop/hot shower/couch nap that much more valuable.
