It’s probably not going to get much better than that under Leach. Maybe we can flirt with 1,300, but our RBs take a beating in this offense. They’re always going to get worn down in Nov.
Well it is the Air Raid. 200 more yards in 20 more attempts sounds a lot like good news to me.
The games we felt got away from us are KY sand LSU (at the time they were still figuring it out and we led 13-0). Those are the games we quit running. The passing game opened up Thursday when we started running. Run more. Running is good.
And this probably doesn't count all the little shovel passes that are essentially what Leach refers to as long hand offs
I need some industrious young chap to pull together our RB receiving yards for catches that resulted in less than 10 yard gain and add that to this. That is our “rushing”. Then I’d like to see total productivity for our RBs. I bet those numbers are solid.
Passes to backs are not the same thing at all as rushing. They don’t wear down a defense. They dont bring anyone extra into the box. They dont set up play action. They dont keep the ends from rushing straight up field over and over.
They also don’t wear down and offensive line and they do move the ball quite effectively.
The idea that passes to the backs are our runs is false. The RB is a safety valve 90% of the time. We aren't designing stuff to throw to the backs first read much.
If it gets yards, who cares?
THIS. I don't know where this "passes to the backs are the same as runs" narrative comes from, but it's ridiculous. They're not the same at all, for the reasons you listed.
I agree on all the swing passes, angle routes, and true screens. However, I disagree on the little slightly forward speed pitches to the outside and the inside shovel pass that is nothing more than a HB Delay. To not include those as part of the running game would be disingenuous.
Agree. But we really don’t run those plays much. We’ll have may one or Two quarters a year we run them a lot, then completely ignore them the rest of the season.

Break down the run game as the year went on. The first 3 games of the season, our backs had over 100 yards per game. Marks was injured and did not play in the Bowling green game. We had around 60 in that game.
Now watch this:
Memphis: 30 attempts- 113 yards
AZ- 21 attempts - 106 yards
LSU- 17 attempts - 97 yards
Pick up mid season to the end:
TAMU 23 attempts- 144 yards.
Ark - 36 attempts- 166 yards
Then injuries happened in a big way... It effects the next 4 games
UK- 8 attempts.. for 20 yards. Marks injured again, and Johnson goes down and misses the next 2 games (plays limited vs UGA)
Bama 21 attempts for 89 yards... no Johnson.
Auburn 10 attempts... 44 yards. Johnson tries but is 3 carries for -1.
UGA 14 attempts 54 yards... Johnson tries but on 6 attempts he gets 9 yards.
ETSU... NO JOHNSON... 10 attempts with about 90 yards. Playing subs massively
Ole Miss- 26 attempts.. 149 yards... Marks banged up.
Those games in the bold are very low for reasons. Yet we still rushed over 1150 yards on the season because the run game became more effective. We had a tough schedule and injuries happened at the wrong time. BUT we showed improvement in the run game and it's more effective than last year. We can only speculate what could have been without the injuries, but next years sets up to be a 1500 yard year on the ground with any improvement on the run game and more depth.
I 100% believe this is why we just took a JUCO RB.
Some of that is true, some not. It does wear down a defense. Pass rushing ALL game is very tiring to a DL which opens up a run game.
