Up 17-14 with 14 minutes remaining against Da U on Nov. 2, 2002.

Miami scored 28 unanswered points.

Hart finished 9-of-23 passing for 110 yards, sharing the workload with backup Ted Trump.

“It was one of those games where as the game went on and as we kept the score close, more and more people came,” Hart said. “By the end of the third quarter, it was nearly a full stadium – probably three-quarters full – which was exciting.”

In the pre-Twitter era, news spread around campus through friends passing along an ESPN upset alert.
Who was there?

Orr is still my favorite RU player.

(Bring back the GS era uni's. They look great)

Great article. Thanks for posting. If that 100yrs Pick Six was overturned, just maybe....

I remember watching the game from our fraternity house and strongly debating on going to it. Never moved from the living room though.

Wandering in after the game started without a ticket was great. Can't do that anymore.

I was at this game!
Don't remember all the details, but parked right near the stadium and bought 2 tickets in the lot for maybe $10 a piece. Decent seats too, uppper level, row 1 if I recall.
Was a cold, cloudy day if I recall.
Once the 4th quarter onslaught was on, my buddy and I sadly bailed on the game and watched the last few minutes at The Knight Club.
Haha, we had bet on Rutgers plus the points this game and were glad they at least covered the spread!

I remember that call. Big East refs served up some home cooking to help the league keep the number 1 team. Glad we don't have to deal with those cheating amateurs anymore.

My father and I were there. It was the last sporting event we attended together. He died on Labor Day weekend in 2006. I was driving back from the win at North Carolina when my sister said he probably had hours to live. I sped home and spent his final hours with him.

Was at this game as well. was only 11 years old at the time but I vividly recall most of the game. That Miami team was something. Little did we know we were watching several Future Hall of Famers on that field for the U. Great resolve by Rutgers to give them everything they could at the time.

This time there will be no almost.

This is a very tough game for OSU since they are in the biggest market and have to live up to their #1 rankings.

RU is playing with house money for this game.

I was a freshman on Busch. After a heavy drinking night Friday night. I awoke around 1. I could hear the band playing. Thought, oh I guess there is a game today. I turn on the TV, yes there is a game, we are playing #1 Miami and we are winning. I woke up 2 other friends and we ran to the stadium just in time to watch Miami score 4 touchdowns about as quickly as Indiana scored 4 touchdowns to start the 3rd quarter.

The headline in the next day's Ledger:THE BITTER END

Yes,I saved the sports section.

I had forgotten about Sean Carty's brain lock in not throwing to Brian Hohmann, who was wide open in the end zone on a fake field goal attempt.

I was planning on watching the tape later, maybe early on Saturday.

Now I have to put the paper back into the sealed container so it doesn't age as badly as I'm doing. On second thought, maybe I'll bring it to the game and show it to my section..

Ummm, so what? This will be the 3rd nationally televised game Ohio State plays this year and the second on the road. National broadcasts do, in fact, include New York City and surrounding areas. There's a lot that will go into the mindset for each time in this game. The bolded part of your statement does not.

The Nate Jones (? ) interception TD called back on a phantom PI was the dagger in that game. That was 14 pt swing .. w
Add in Sean Carty running to his left on a fake FG and didn't even see wide-open (by 15 yards) Ray Pilch on the right side. After all that went in Miami's favor, we got toasted in the 4th quarter.

That was Ryan Hart's first start against a lot of future NFL all-pro bowlers. Yikes! And Hart wore no. 11 because senior punter Mike Barr wore 13.

It was somewhat satisfying to hear the ESPN analysts making fun of the Big East refs on Sunday morning about that phantom interference penalty. I think they had 3 or 4 replays from different angles.

P.S. The article says Sean Carty missed a wide-open Brian Hohmann on the fake FG attempt. Trust me, they got it wrong. Hohmann was covered like a blanket on the left side.

I posted this but it got deleted for some reason....anyway, I was there and I saw a ref signal that Jones stepped out of bounds around the Miami 30....we still should have gotten possession and Miami would not have followed up with the td right then and there......

it was a bad call in the end zone, but not a RU td

I was there as well.

Sat in the student section (though I was a young alum) and joined in the raucous "Bye Bye Heisman" chants directed to Dorsey. Was one of the most fun games I have ever attended in my RU fandom.

That Miami team was ridiculously stacked.

A few things that stuck out

1.) that phantom PI call changed the game complety...17-14 lot different Than 23-8. Greg said lster he was going to go for 2 there to make it a 17 pt game

2.) the fake fg was a easy 6 had carry thrown the ball

3.) the defense was absolutely terrific in this game

4.) what stuck out to me thst day most was the almost goal line stand. Down 21-17...trump throws a pick and returns it to the ru 1. Three straight times, miamit tries to run and got stuffed. The number one team, defending nAtional champs and 30 game winning streak had to resort to play action from Dorsey to kelvin winds low to score and put is away

The grittiness on that drive had me leaving Rutgers stadium that day that Schiano would get it done. Seriously....
