I am so excited to get to overreact to this.
Gavin screams PRO to me. He had like 10 points in the first half and I don't think he missed. I doubt 1&D unless he shoots the **** out of the ball as a freshman, but I think he might have the most NBA potential of anyone on our roster in the last 20 years.

Antonio Chol is a SHOOTER! I love Oskar coming back but Chol gives the 2nd unit a lot of shooting AND defensive potential that Oskar can't. I'd be stoked if we could get contributions out of him.

Derek Simpson looked good, about the same as last year. Was just cool to get to see some different options with Noah and JMike. JMike is similar to freshman year Jalen Miller but definitely not the same level of pest defensively, and of course with more offensive juice.

From what I saw, Wolf was really toying with some perimeter decision-making and playmaking and he was overmatched. 2 really bad turnovers with no one really forcing them. I'm all for trying out things in these meaningless preseason games though so this is probably good for him in the long run.

They’re up the floor so quickly, even after a make by the other team.

Also I just watched Chol sink three three pointers in a couple minute span. They seem to be shooting a LOT of them.

Some quick takes:

1. Woolfolk is only a back up 5 - still will only score near the basket, but will defend most 5's.
2. JD will surpass Fernandez by season's end if not sooner, if not for defensive reasons only.
3. GG might already be our best all around player.
4. Oscar - Catch and shoot. Don't put the ball on the floor.
5. Hyatt - Nice three ball, but please give it up now and then.
6. Chol - Might need another year in the oven.
7. Cliff should be putting down 30 vs. that competition. He'll never be the dominant player he should be if we're taking 42 threes.
8. I know it's water under the bridge, but in IMO this team would be really good if PM would have accepted a lesser role at the 3 & 4 positions.
9. GG has already made me forget about that kid at UCONN. What's his name?
10. I've seen better crowds at fifth grade CYO games.

Chol was hot from deep in the parts I saw.

A good pressing D setup would include JaMike, Simpson and Mag for sure. But not sure anyone is giving up on Noah (a proven offensive weapon at a high level) just yet.

I think you're underestimating Chol.
Not sure how well Paul fits into this offense.
Overall, the offense had more movement with better shooters.
If the defense can be respectable with an improved offense, this team can be trouble for the B1G.

Agreed on all fronts. And you probably have my favorite handle/username of all time.

To me, the thing we are going to miss the most is the length and REBOUNDING of Paul and Caleb, especially in the Big Ten. And without Mag this is a well below Big Ten defensive team. Will more movement on offense and better shooting make up for it? I hope so.

This. Perspective is definitely needed on the competition level we’re playing against in Portugal. Not to pick on Oskar, but any team he can pull in 9 rebounds against in a game probably isn’t even close to low major D1 caliber competition. This is a kid who did not pull in more than 2 rebounds once last year, and only had more than two rebounds twice in his career 3 and 4). He has 41 total career rebounds over 3 seasons that include plenty of garbage time play and action against low majors. Senegal might have had a few real players - this Portugal team must really stink.

That's the trade-off for better offense. This is where I hope Jermaiah Williams and Mag have their biggest impact when healthy. I think the team is better at on-the-ball defense, which can be effective in eating up the shot clock and result in poor shots by the opponent. Everyone has to work hard to box their man out.

The team they played was awful. You have to rebound to run, and this team, especially without Mag, doesn't look like a great rebounding team, and I don't see us getting 42 good looks from three in the Big Ten unless teams decide not to close out. I think the main read you can make from this game is that Gavin Griffiths is very good, and a definite starter.

It’s an exhibition trip. Maybe Pike wants to try a wide open, run and gun approach and observe how the team responds. They attacked the basket well and also launched a wide open 3 point attack. Didn’t see any post up moves from Cliff in the 1st half.

I prefer this type of offense over Paul trying to slowly back down a quicker defender above the top of the key with Caleb waiting for a perimeter pass.

Great to see Chol play well. Is he the next Herve?

Did Chol play well or did he just make a few shots?
A contested 3 point step back with Gavin open one pass away gets him back on the bench if he misses that in a real game

I have high hopes for him but he’s got to make better decisions. It was like a 40 point game at that point so maybe I’m over analyzing
