The OL has been crappy for MSU's QBs for a long time. Here are the numbers:

2018- We ranked 49th in sacks allowed. allowing 25 in 323 attempts

2019- We ranked 93rd in sacks allowed...... allowing 31 in 315 attempts

The real kicker is the attempts made that got them there. Let's compare

In 2019, Georgia was ranked 5th and allowed 15.... yet they threw it 415 times.

We have gone from throwing it on average of 24 times per game to 57 per game. We are ranked 93rd again in sacks allowed right now. Yet #5 in passing offense in the nation.

- Our OL hasn't become trash. They were recruited based on their skills for a specific type of offense that is NOT what we have been transitioning to.

Just curious

how does that factor in hurries, interceptions, pick 6's? ( we are 2 yards short of having one more).

Our passing game is a disaster, Where run seems not to be an option.

Twilight Zone for the time being.

The difference is a 3 man front is getting through on every play. Do yourself a favor and lurk. Posting doesn't work well for you.

No... Just because they put a 3 man front up doesn't mean that every play is just 3 rushing. The point is, stop acting like a spoiled *** brat over something that has not just become a problem. We have had it for 3 years.

The factor is that until Leach can train and recruit an OL that is a pass blocking machine, the QB is not going to have alot of time.

OL has not been good because we have been one dimensional ever since Mullen left. With Leach, it’s by design. With moorehead, it’s because he couldn’t coach the offense.

I’ll say this about you though, you are by the biggest cheerleader of whoever the head coach is. You defended moorehead to the end and start numerous threads defending leach.

It's 3 17ing DL they need to block. Stingray could do a better job some plays if he just fell on the field and started eating a bucket of chicken. Quit making excuses for Leach. He's been dogshit so far implementing his offense and calling plays.

At Washington State, yes just one time.

He finished in the top 25 in five of his ten years at Texas Tech, counting 2009 when he was fired before the bowl game. For reference, Mullen only did it in three out of nine years at State, counting 2017 when he left before the bowl game.

He finished at #10 in 2018 at WSU (which is higher than Mullen ever finished here). He also won 8+ games for 2015-2017, and came very close to finishing top 25 in each of those.

And yes, he finished in the top 25 in five of his last six seasons at TTU.

No. That's not true at all. Under Moorhead, we ran the ball in 2018. In fact we ran it 514 to 323 passing. That's not one dimensional. It was nearly the exact same thing in 2019.

The OL is not good under Leach because they were a run block recruited OL. See the numbers.

What it is is you trying to shine a turd. Mullen was never facing 8 man zones with 3 guys rushing his OL. It's unacceptable for any offensive line in any division of football to not be able to block 3 guys. Even Leach would tell you that.

Well someone here is throwing a temper tantrum.

"We were literally missing guys standing right in front of us,... 'Well, I thought he had him?' Well, he wouldn't be standing right in front of you if the other guy had him. We're battling some definite growing pains, and we definitely experienced a bunch of them there.". - Mike Leach after A&M

PFF from end of last season college offensive line rankings.

42. MISSISSIPPI STATE BULLDOGS
Highest-graded player: OT Tyre Phillips – 80.8 (32nd)

The Bulldogs did a good job of allowing time in the pocket this season, giving up pressure just 2.96 seconds after the snap on average, the 24th-best mark in the FBS. Still, no player graded higher than 32nd overall at their position, and their lack of consistency prevented them from climbing this list further.

Focus on time in the pocket. 24th best mark in the FBS. Out of 130. So far this year? Costello and Rogers with an average of 2.59 and 2.64 seconds in the pocket, which ranks No. 112 and 118 in the country, respectively.

Those are statistics. Facts. The eyeball test doesn't lie either. Since LSU our opponents are dropping 8 damn near every play. Once in a while they send 4. Maybe even 5. Still a hat on a hat for a good OL.This line looks like the 5 guys opening the doors at Walmart on Black Friday. They make 3 and 4 rushers feel like 7.

Under Morehead there were a lot of sacks. That was because of slow developing plays, QB's holding the ball, and receivers not getting open. 24th in the country in time in the pocket last season. Not bad in the SEC.

No one is saying our OL has been anything better than atrocious. With the exception of a couple of guys, the entire unit has been terrible. It must get better.

But the reality is that it can and should get better in time. WSU’s OL ran this scheme against defensive fronts as talented or more talented than Arkansas and Kentucky, and they were elite pass blocking the last two seasons under Miller. That tells me the issue is something other than scheme.

Does that mean we will have to develop our way out of it? Recruit our way out of it by getting guys with better feet? Maybe a little of both? I don’t know, but evidence shows we absolutely should not be having these same issues two years from now. If we are, then things went really bad.

I think the OP is saying our OLine has been this bad at pass blocking for the last 3 years. It has not. Certainly it will get better with new players.

I'm of the opinion that good coaches adapt scheme to personnel, adjust game plans based on opponents, and make in game adjustments according to the other teams scheme. I don't expect Leach to run the power I, but this is pathetic for the last 3 games.

Now we are applauding the cleaning up of the program and having a team full of good men. Stubbornness and character only remind me of one coach in recent memory.

It's not exactly 5 blocking 3. The ends are lining up so far out that the tackles are completely 1v1. We apparently don't have anyone other than Cross on the roster that can play OT, so we're getting destroyed on the right side. And until second half of A&M we've refused to use a TE to help. So the biggest problem is we don't have that second tackle that can go 1v1 with SEC ends.

What's been disturbing is when the nose tackle gets between the center and guard practically untouched, and the RB whiffs on picking him up. I think that's where Leach has complained about guys not blocking someone who's right in front of them.

I think the interior guys can improve just from more reps, maybe two weeks of practice and extra time to review what they've done wrong will go a long way. But the only way the RT situation gets better is to start using a TE to help.

I'm sure this is over simplication and I'm no expert at all but with the end so far out it seems like we could bring the right guard back to help right tackle and just take that end 5 yards behind the pocket 2 on 1. I know that would take a little quickness to get in position to block him. That would leave 2 on one in the middle and Cross one on one. I guess its not that simple or we would be doing it. It is frustrating as 17 watching them whip 5 linemen almost every play. But that is an issue I was pointing out last year too. But we were not getting beat by 3. Getting whipped by 5 is easier to accept

Anyone comparing Leach to Croom is a fool. Croom had no record of head coaching experience. Leach has won at every stop. The fact is our OL hasn't been good in years. Moorhead had to drop his system because we couldn't run it with this line and our QB & ****** WRs. It's the same now. And no, Leach shouldn't change to a running team like Moorhead tried because the talent sucks. We've got to move on from that. Playing a 10 game SEC schedule is brutal, especially without spring and summer to prepare and clean out the issues. Leach may fail, but he needs to do it his way and not fold like Moorhead. This is a rebuild. We've got a top 25 class (likely) in a tough year to recruit. Just need to keep bringing in players that fit.

This whole back and forth is dumb. Everyone knows and agrees that the pass blocking needs to improve dramatically.

I will be satisfied if we see some offensive improvement by the end of the year. That is all I need. I'm still confident that Leach will fix things. He has before and he will again.

That's the truth. It's the notion that Leach somehow "croomed" us that's over the top and dumb. The OL has been a problem in pass protection for 3 years.

A big part is that the wide splits should help is preventing an outside rush by the DE from being a problem. If the DE goes for an outside move it should be relatively easy for the OT to ride him deep in the pocket so the QB can easily step up and avoid him. The real bad breakdowns are when they come loose inside the OT. That should never happen. This coupled with the failures on the NT are leading to many of our sacks.

Every week, it’s becoming more and more clear that Leach’s success here is going to be determined by his ability to recruit/develop OLs that fit his scheme. He is going to sign better QBs and WRs than we’ve ever gotten. We will be fine at RB. As long as we make good hires and recruit at our usual level, we will have a competent defense.

It all comes down to the OL.
