The long time English teacher and voice of Northumberland athletics Donn Belfield passed away this afternoon. If you went to a game at Northumberland most likely his voice was over the PA. Probably the only pa person who actually told you what was on his mind while announcing a game giving funny and random takes along the way. Belfield was also an assistant coach for many years including being on staff for the 1996 boys state championship team. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and the whole Northumberland community.
Well said. From what I am told, Mr. Donn Belfield was a beloved NHS English teacher and chair. He also assisted big time in helping NHS win the boys state basketball title in 1996 as Jdavis54 mentioned. He was the long time Voice of the Indian Nation and advocated for both academics and athletics.
He also fought for all educators to be recognized and celebrated. In very recent years, TWO Northumberland County teachers have been identified as Virginia Region 3 Teachers of the Year (out of just 7 in the entire state honored each year).
The Voice of the Northumberland Nation will be honored himself this coming Friday prior to start of the football game against Mathews.
